D&D General Defining your campaing through art? Or how I learned to embrace anime elf ears (image-heavy)

Very nice. I always wonder if there is a lot of pressure on artist to draw very "mainstream" until someone comes along and says "please, for this product, define your own style".

D&D General Defining your campaing through art? Or how I learned to embrace anime elf ears (image-heavy)

Deedlit is a perfect example, and she made the anime elf ears somewhat popular, I think. Though computer games like Lineage and WoW helped too.

D&D General Defining your campaing through art? Or how I learned to embrace anime elf ears (image-heavy)

I think I have to say sorry for not contributing more to "my" thread - a surprise vaccination left me somewhat, uh, under the weather. Anyway, I think that I... uh... think so much about art these days because it allows me to define game concepts I`ve known for a long time in a different way...

TSR TSR3 Blames Widespread Pushback On WotC

It`s a typical example of opinion bubbles. Hate subreddits like KotakuInAction support this interpretation and ban anyone who posts anything else. If you do not bother to look beyond your vicious supporters, you see yourself as the pure victim of a big conspiracy.

D&D General Defining your campaing through art? Or how I learned to embrace anime elf ears (image-heavy)

It should be required reading at D&D academy. It is incredibly how much THOUGHT someone put into conceptualizing - and then drawing - dungeon ecologies!

D&D General Defining your campaing through art? Or how I learned to embrace anime elf ears (image-heavy)

I think this ties into what I said in the original post. It is just an ebb and flow of influences that change how artists depict fantastical people. I don`t think there`s anything else behind it - just a broadening of the concept of fantasy races and a broad range of media influences of all kinds.

D&D General Defining your campaing through art? Or how I learned to embrace anime elf ears (image-heavy)

I admit it, I have always been somewhat conservative if it comes to D&D art. I didn`t rail against the "belt economy" in 3.x as much as others, but most art from Reynolds et. al. grew old very quick for me (beyond Eberron). Fast forward to today and to me preparing a new campaign. I always do a...

TSR Companies & Freelancers Distance Themselves From The New TSR

By the way, if someone still thinks this topic is not worth discussing, remember that ENworld is an island of calm, a save haven. Read (or don´t) the threads on Reddit if you want to know what hits you when you dare to openly question this kind of rhetoric. I shudder how it must feel for people...

    D&D 5E celebrating pride and lgbtq+ players 2021

That Wotc even takes the time to write about this topic is important. I know some people like to joke about this or say "hey, I've always done it this way". Well. guess what - many people didn`t, and I can assure you that right now, the shitstorm is brewing how Wotc forces politics into their...

D&D 5E Tasha's Drow Art and the Future of Their Depictions in D&D

I can. I`ve become very good at ignoring the stupid ballast that D&D is carrying around because some yokel said "let`s curse the cellar fairies with dark skin" back in the day. I`ve had decades of experience of ignoring my memories of the Chronomancer cover, so ignoring insensitive naughty word from...

D&D 5E Tasha's Drow Art and the Future of Their Depictions in D&D

We need more flying elf clerics who are also Drow with ecology-appropriate skin tone which was not ordained as a curse because they did something wrong is a result of the effects of Underground Drow Radiation on skin pigmentation combined with a lack of sunlight or sunlight-related light...

D&D 5E Tasha's Drow Art and the Future of Their Depictions in D&D

Why not? The look was taken from popular media. Just like 99% of all D&D content was. If there were elves with those ears as plastic figures in Kellogs Frisbees (TM) in the 80s, our books would be full of them. Most elves in early D&D books look like humans with glued-on ears anyway. Might as...

D&D 5E Tasha's Drow Art and the Future of Their Depictions in D&D

That would work as well in my group as it did when I tried to tell the players that, yes, those gnobbly-eared monstrosities on the front of the Dark Sun box are your player characters. Some artwork simply didn`t age well - no pun intended. Also, I love the Record of Lodoss war elf ears these...

D&D 5E Tasha's Drow Art and the Future of Their Depictions in D&D

I hope to see lots of cosplay of that and hopefullly never a cosplay of Drizzt do Urden from the cover of Drizzt do Urdens Guide to the Underdark shudders. Or every single person on the NPC cards in the Menzoberranzan Boxed set. shudders even more

D&D 5E Tasha's Drow Art and the Future of Their Depictions in D&D

I know that some people will dislike this interpretation, but it made me very happy when i saw it. The players I have right now are all young and first-time D&Ders, and they love drow pictures like these. None of them would even look at the old drow as possible player characters, but this was...

D&D 5E Everything We Know About The Ravenloft Book

The point is to belittle attempts to be sensitive about specific themes and subjects. You know, like: "don´t think too hard about problematic stuff - let`s rather make jokes about those who try to do anything about them". I had people like that at my gaming table. Briefly. Very briefly.
