D&D 5E Amazon US book sales rank.

Well, the PHB debuted on the USA Today Bestseller List at #57. That's lower, IIRC, than some previous 5th edition releases. On the other hand, it had a lot of non-bookstore sales before its general release date, it had the D&D Beyond bundle sales, there's the question as to what exactly is...

D&D (2024) Ranger: is Horde Breaker a bit too good for level 3?

Given the attacks would have to be divided among at least three foes anyway (since neither of the two Horde Breaker attacks could be against someone the ranger already attacked that turn), if a 3rd level character did manage to set it up so they could attack with their reaction on their turn...

RPG Evolution: The Right to Archive

So, a few things of note. 1) National Geographic did its release of "our whole archive on CD-ROM" thing in 1997, so two years before Dragon, which probably made TSR/WotC feel rather confident in the legality of their project. 2) New York Times Company, Inc. v. Tasini (2001) is not, in fact...

Yes. Checking my Amazon orders, I paid $29.97 (before tax) for the PHB I pre-ordered on July 20, 2014.

D&D 5E Amazon US book sales rank.

One interesting phenomenon is that Amazon has not deeply discounted the 2024 PHB at any point. I think the maximum I saw off MSRP was around 10%, and now it's back down to 0.8% or so. Which makes me suspect that Amazon sales, whatever they wind up as, have been approximately supply-constrained.

D&D (2024) Forgotten Realms Player Guide

Yeah, thri-kreen have much the same early publication history as wemics -- invented for the 1982 Monster Cards, then included in the 1983 Monster Manual II, then updated for AD&D 2e in 1989's Monstrous Compendium Volume Three Forgotten Realms Appendix, and collected in the 1993 Monstrous Manual...

D&D (2024) Forgotten Realms Player Guide

Hmm? Wemics were published in 1983's AD&D Monster Manual II (page 126). They were kinda implicitly Realms-ized later on, with their first 2nd edition publication being in the Monstrous Compendium Volume Three Forgotten Realms Appendix, and their first 3.x publication in Monster Compendium...

D&D (2024) Forgotten Realms Player Guide

Okay, I realize this is a bit of pedantic historical detail (I put "Pedantic Grognard" as my title over to the left for a reason, people), grabbing the archives of the old Realms-L mailing list off the Internet Archive and doing a search through the late 2000/early 2001 part of the mbox file, I...

Er, no, not that, either. Cloak & Dagger, which was released in June 2000 for AD&D 2nd edition (2 months before the 3e PHB), has quite a bit about Fzoul Chembryl and Iyachtu Xvim, complete through the year 1370 DR. The book then had a "Future Expectations" heading that detailed some events...

D&D General The D&D Cartoon is set in Faerun since when?

Well, I mean, it depends on how you define "was a thing". But the cartoon series was already cancelled and had broadcast its last episode more than a year before the signing of the contract in which TSR bought the Realms from Ed Greenwood.

D&D (2024) The changes to languages are a good start

Well, 3.5 did, vestigially; it declared every class but barbarians were literate, and that barbarians could gain literacy for 2 skill points or by taking a level in any other class. (I note that technically, rules-as-written, this meant holders of NPC classes like Commoner, Expert, and Warrior...

D&D (2024) Why is Ritual Caster gated?

To go back to the feat as quoted: "Choose a number of level 1 spells equal to your Proficiency Bonus that have the Ritual tag. You always have those spells prepared[.]" Then, the general rule for ritual spells that you quoted (not part of the text of the feat) is: "If you have a spell...

D&D General Interview with Chris Cocks on D&D AI, the OGL, and more

What a stone-cold, bald-faced liar. Video games were already huge business -- $30 billion worldwide in 1998 (and that's in 1998 dollars), about ten times Hasbro's 1998 worldwide net revenues -- well before the OGL was written. Which is why the WotC/Hasbro-written OGL Software FAQ specifically...

D&D 5E So, I kind of want to stay with 2014 rules. What are my longterm options?

So, the biggest issue, as I see it, is being able to introduce the rules to new players. Options as I see 'em: 1. Buy lots of extra/used copies of the 2014 PHB (and other books as necessary) to lend to new players, hope you never run out/can replace. (Not that improbable given the sheer number...
