The Myth of the Necessity of Magic Items

The problem is the Open Market, then. Anyway, can anyone give me Chapter and Verse on where it says that magic items can be bought and sold, no problem? I only have Core 3.0, so I am probably out-of-date, but I would never allow the players to just pony-up money and get whatever they wanted...

The Myth of the Necessity of Magic Items

Yeah, I <3 Apparatus of Kwalish, Iron Bands of Bilarro, Horn of Blasting, Flying Carpet, Ring of Shooting Stars, Rod of Lordly Might... Sword +5? I like it, but not so much. And Stat-boosters, while strong, just don't have the same charm. I guess I'm probably in the minority, though, liking...

Final Fantasy Zero: Design Diary continued

Re. Bio: My guess is that it's fine either way, but if I were designing it, I'd skip the straight damage altogether and just leave it up to the poison. I assume you've already considered this option and discarded it; care to comment on any obvious (or non-obvious) impediments to that?

What's the problem with bringing PCs back from the dead?

This is a downer on that theory. Of course, Sumerians were just plain depressed about everything anyway. Personally, I have no problem with Raise Dead/Ressurrection. I just assume that it's an ability that's held by very few people anyway -- but I assume also that level progression is an...

    I HATE the term GISH

"Paladin" derives from "Palatine" only obliquely (through the "Palatine Guard"); "Paladin" was the name for the Twelve Peers of Charlemagne in the Matter of France, and some of the Arthurian Knights adopted the title "Paladin of the ______", I recall "Faith" and "Queen" at least, meaning they...

    buying xp

Heh. This 1 gp = 1 xp existed in OD&D. Please see this for the logical conclusion. Of course, back then you got the XP for finding the treasure, not spending it, so you got both the XP and the money. But I hold that an excess of gold is less of a game-breaker than an excess of levels. YMMV.

Final Fantasy Zero: Design Diary continued

Whoops. Besides that, it has a good jive. It's an alternating set of spells which improve every other rank, just flattened at the top because we don't have a Rank XI. It's easy to remember. I tried to figure out if there was a like pattern on the White list, but I wasn't able to see it. Is...

    Eliminating charisma

Charisma is still used for reaction rolls (of course, now it's called "untrained Diplomacy/Perform/whatever skill check"). The DM can arbitrarily change Diplomacy and Perform to link to Dexterity, or Will save, or Character Level, but why? Charisma is perfectly all right. As for not...

    Mixing Races....and why DM's shouldn't allow it

Hmm. How 'bout half owl, half bear: ;)

    Help me accept psionics

I have always pictured Psionicists as being more-or-less Indian in flavour (Hindu ascetics are all about "mind over body" and Concentration, and I have felt some of those powers have distinctly Hindu flavour). Unfortunately, I know very little about Sanskrit, but throwing terms like "Chakra"...

Leaving Significant Other at Home to Game on V-Day?

We don't celebrate St. Valentine's Day where I live (we celebrate our SOs on June 13th, St. Anthony's Day). But I had to work until late anyway, so it's a trebly moot point. ;)

    "Epic" progression after 6th level

According to the sixth post, 500xp * the target score (raising STR from 17 to 18 costs 9000xp, for example). As if this is "correct" or not, it does simulate pretty well an ability cap -- it gets more and more expensive as you increase your bonus. Remember, the XP bonuses for monsters parks at...

    Licensing of Hobbits and Orcs

My understanding is that he applied most of the Finnish sound-changes to the PIE-lookalike Primitive Elvish to yield Quenya and most of the Welsh sound-changes to the same language to yield Sindarin. This way he gets a language that "sounds like" each but grammatically still contains quite a...

    Ogre - etymology

I've read on a dictionary (not an English one, though) that it was attested in Old French as a word for "infidel", likely more specifically a Moor. Further than that, it's speculation.

    "Epic" progression after 6th level

That's pretty interesting. I'll try and convince my players to run a campaign using these rules. But maybe allow skills to reach up to rank 10, just for ranks to vary from one to ten... Although the last level might be double cost. One other thing I would do here is allow rings to be forged...

    Pure Fun

Yes, but would the group sit around me for half an hour and help me compose it? The average gamer might think that's holding up the game a little too much. Besides, what if you finish telling your message in the first stanza? A sonnet must have all four stanzas. Do you fill it with gibberish...

What I want is so precious little!

There's an Indy RPG called The Burning Wheel which deals with that using a mechanics called beliefs. Everyone gets three, and it's something the characters believe in that ties into a character goal. Every time one of them does something that ties into the belief, they get "artha" (something...

What gameworld would you want to be in?

The world of the Intercontinental Union of Disgusting Characters. I'd mug a Centaur, take his four 1 Mgp gems, rinse and repeat until I gain twenty-odd levels, and retire in Elysium.

    Pure Fun

Are we talking about the real thing? These sonnets are a tad too hard to make You're bound to think you've made a big mistake If you should follow all the rules therein. Four stanzas, four-four-three-three you must sing The first two should rhyme like A-B-B-A. C-D-C D-C-D you ought to make The...

    No Second Edition Love?

Funny, that's sort of like a description I've heard for the difference between a school teacher and a university professor. The school teacher is supposed to be this figure of authority who hands down the knowledge to the students, who absorb it unquestioningly. On the other hand, the...
