My D&D Game would suffer without Anime!!!!

As a matter of fact, I believe that an anime/manga that could mesh well with D&D would be Houshin Engi/Soul Hunter (personally, I'd just drop the clown outfits, but you gotta know how to pick and choose). Race of superbeings which perform miracles through the use of treasures: It's just like...

does CN get a bad rap?

You can have motive without it being evil, you know. I'm one of those who don't "allow" evil alignments because I don't want to put up with atrocities made by the players. If anyone wants to play an evil charater, well, they can DM today, then. Regardless, my usual gaming group is Neutral...

Final Fantasy Zero: Design Diary continued

Very cool. Question, though: This "Chronist" job, is it like the Time Mage from V? It's described as a "knight", so I assume not, but then where is it from? Inquiring minds must know, and all that jazz, although I'm probably just coming off as ignorant... ;-) Really, I just dug the hats...

    No Second Edition Love?

Yeah, I remember playing an adventure (I think it was the one that came with the FRCS boxed set) where our freshly-generated first-level characters had to investigate the underground beneath that tower in Shadowdale the name of which escapes me right now. The captain of the guard responsible...

    The "orc baby" paladin problem

Yes and no. You may hold that alignment is a guideline; that may be so. But there are two things to consider: First, alignment is not wholly subjective, since beings do radiate it. Therefore there is a limit what people may get away with even if they think they're doing the right thing. Lord...

    Staple Fantasy Races

Mage: the Ascension and Vampire: the Masquerade have fairies. They're called Changelings, though. Of course, there, the elves are called Sidhe, the gnomes are called Boggans, the Dwarves have been split in twain and half joined with giants to form Trolls and half became Nockers. Oh, and Orcs...

My D&D Game would suffer without Anime!!!!

Exactly! I always thought that was the medium's greatest strength: There's so much stuff being made that even if Japanese studios were only half as competent as American ones, you'd still have five times as many prime-quality shows being aired... It's just a question of finding them. But...

How have you made ogres more interesting?

I enjoyed Dragonlance's take on them: Takhisis's Firstborn, with an ancient civilisation the ruins of which are still on the mountains. Not to mention Ogre Irda, for whom I have a soft spot (one of my first characters was one, and gotta love shapechangers).

What DO you DO for... Monks?

OA had a Flying Kick Martial Arts feat, which I thought was pretty nifty. It allowed one to do double damage on a charge with an unarmed attack, like lances. Anyway, it could have a crazy Tai Chi name, like The Groundhog Leaves its Burrow, or somesuch.

Base Class Based On Avatar: The Last Airbender Series

Yes, except that in the cartoon "bending" is intimately connected to unarmed martial arts. Waterbenders' moves were based off Tai Chi, Earthbenders' off Hung Gar Kung Fu, Airbenders' moves off Ba Gua Quan, and Firebenders' off Northern Shaolin Kung Fu. So it'd make no sense for them not to...

    No Second Edition Love?

That's a good question. I guess you don't learn to jump, dodge or climb in magic-user school. That you learn playing with your friends as a kid before you're pawned off to the local wizard to do his laundry and learn magic from him. Regardless, it's not about training for it or not training...

My D&D Game would suffer without Anime!!!!

Ranes: I take it you've never seen Cowboy Bebop, then. Or Wings of Honneamise. Or Macross Plus. Granted, none of those are fantasy, but Record of Lodoss War is, and they deal with lots more interesting subjects than merely pubescent rape fantasies. But hey, to each his own.

    Stacking Blues

Full disclosure: I haven't actually played with these rules, seeing that they're the fruit of some discussions I've seen throughout these forums. So take everything here with a grain of salt. Many people feel that, at higher levels, D&D is broken, because you can get so many different kinds of...

    Non-Boring Cleric Ideas

Define semi-shared. What's the concept for the character, though? Define her in one line. And you can't say "Female Elf Cleric of Ehlonna". What are her goals in life? Her fears? Does she have a home town? A beloved teacher?

    No Second Edition Love?

TX, if you want to adjust chance based on difficulty, then use a modifier to the roll rather than choose a whole different ability. Even better: use a DC mechanic! And then don't tell them what's the difficulty, have them tell you how high they rolled. Tell me this: if my character drew a...

Which is REALLY the best alignment?

NG all the way. Playing D&D for me is always about being heroic, and Neutral Good is as heroic as it gets. Even in the Complete Book of Villains in 2e, there was a section on roleplaying villains of each alignment. LG was there, CG was there, but on NG Rick Swan had to throw in the towel: he...

D&D 4E What would you like 4E to look like.

Ok, starting from the top: 1. Make the attribute modifiers the attributes, since they're the only numbers that matter. This would do away with the "odd attribute" problem. 2. Give combat more colour, not necessarily more options. I had much love for the 2e Punching and Wrestling table, odd...

    No Second Edition Love?

2e Unarmed I second that. You know, not to derail the thread, but when a lot of people complain about combat not being "realistic", they are actually complaining that combat is not descriptive enough. Fighters were called the "poor cousins" of AD&D for exactly that reason (look at the...
