Question for the grognards: Why does D&D have dwarves/elves/hobbits etc.?

Indivisible Since Tolkien is largely inspired by the Nibelungen (Ring Cycle), and the Nibelungen is deeply inspired by German muthology and folklore, and other flavors were thrown into the mix, the end result is what we got in AD&D: a Tolkien flavor indivisible from the rest, and perhaps areas...

Limits for magic items PCs can buy when starting at high level

Pointless Exercise (imnsho) Much ado about nothing since the 11th lvl characters would normally be able (when equipped) to challenge CR15 and thus, have (had) a good chance of acquiring major items. The net effect on the campaign, except for having wracked your brains and wasted your time, is...

    Drow - good for anything?

Remember the D Modules? In the long- forgotten days when the largely unheard-of drow inhabited a portion of the subterranean world, and the subterranean world did not extend all over the place. <sigh> Greyhawk made sense. There is a reason why the Forgotten Realms are eventually forgotten...

How common were wishes in AD&D1?

Uncommonly Lots... Uncommon, but the instances of tricks made wishes more common. Within my campaign, one PC owned a VERY powerful sword, and that egotistic item got a Wish/year. The PC soon learned to be wary since the sword would use the wish to make itself more powerful (new powers, power...

    Why do you play D&D?

Game / System As a game, I would love to say because of the fun of it, but it is simply not true. Come to think of it, D&D and other RPGs tend to eb rife with frustrations, coupled with very funny moments, but that's not the same thing as watchign LotR which was wall-to-wall fun, is it? No...

    Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser?

F & GM The Internet is rife with areas where these great classics can be found. The Lankhmar bits really only concern them. Leiber did write other fine material, some sci-fi and some touching on horror, or satire, but little else (to the best of my knowledge) that involves fantasy. Make sure...

Paycheck - One of the worst movies ever!

Standards: The Yardstick All movies should be judged in relation to the mind-boggling production values of the eternal and incontrovertible "Treasure of the Four Crowns"... No person on Earth should even dare comment on any other movie until they have readjusted their reality to discuss the...

    Driving Back the Gnolls

Can't Help You, sorry! Players in my game have erased gnolls from the face of the planet... They are naught but a memory now.

Stepping over "The Line" in a campaign

If you must... ...and sometimes it would be best, why not have a deity of Fate and multiple paths. Should the PCs commit suicide accidentally, or stupidly, they may be deemed obliterated, BUT, their alter egos live on in a parallel fate path. Saves a lot of headaches.

So how do you play cohorts, familiars and animal companions?

I 2nd the Motion! Additional point: the cohort behaves as the player dictates until the DM finds the cohort may have conflicting interests or feels altogether differently... "Slay the witch of Dunham Woods? Are you daft? She's Auntie Irma, she is!"

    Considering engineering a TPK

Different Strokes for Different Folks Maybe, just maybe, you're not the ideal DM for this group and they're not the ideal group for you (vice versa, versa vice)... Ever latched on to questionnaires about D&D campaigns? They can usually be googled and surely shed SOME light as to player...

    TPK Your Entire Party

    AD&D1 is like a B-17

2¢ & Flames at the Forge ? Let me see, if we really wanted to compare editions, we'd need to state the blatantly obvious: - were it not for the amount of material that keeps getting published for D&D / d20, I would likely NOT play 3.5, because... - everybody likes to play a vibration version...

Is an Edition Warz moritorium possible?

Moratorium is now in effect... ...with 3.5 declared an OK game, and 2e a good game near its end run, and AD&D the best ever... We all agree ! :uhoh:

What version of D&D is your favourite to play (expanded poll)

Heavily Biased For a set of rules to be favorite, the presumption must be that you actually HAVE played / tried out earlier editions... The poll should have reflected that since many players will never actually have seen anything but the covers of 1e or 2e, or OD&D, or Basic...

Minnesota Gamers - Something You Should Be Aware Of - (LGS Rant)

"This is The Source, oops, the winter of our discontent..." In a nutshell, there is around here (Montreal) a very large and very well-known FLGS that I have supported at three different addresses from small to large. They lost my business over a minor "Frequent purchase card" issue. They...

How often do NPCs/monsters flee in your group?

Flight... Works best when flying... As others have mentioned, my group(s) tend to doggedly pursue, so escape plans have to be fool (and bullet / missile / spell) proof.

What is wrong with race class limits?

Not ! <loud buzzer sound indicating error> In any edition, when the situation "outclasses" (pun intended) or overwhelms (in terms of level) the proponent, you're in deep doo doo... Sure you can stay in townm become a bard, and play old songs, but you won't go anywhere with your buddies the...

Worse Rules that game designers have made?

Omg ! The more I read this, the more I am tempted to throw all 3e/3.5 books in a box and dedicate my time to AD&D instead... Paladins need empowering to be rebalanced: it has to do with the number of key abilities required for the class to work... Str, AND Wis, AND Cha, AND preferably Con and...

How bad does the bard suck?

They Suck... ...in the dungeon, the delve, the mines, pretty much in the wilds and just about anywhere else. However, if you have the good sense of never leaving town, or better yet, never stepping out the door of the inn where the hackneyed cliché party assembled and where you might have...
