Building a settlement from scratch, how much progress by month?

The good thing is that this is a rainforest, so natural water is just a few hours wait. Also Mexico's Yucatan has cenotes, which are natural wells--sinkholes that expose groundwater. The Mayans made heavy use of them. I'm going to say there's one in the settlement's back yard, which while not a...

Building a settlement from scratch, how much progress by month?

@Johnny3D3D I appreciate the suggestion, as well as other tips like "Look up books on this" and such, but I honestly am not intent on being that detailed. I came to the message boards hoping someone would be able to tell me. I've done this before, asking how far settlements should be from one...

Building a settlement from scratch, how much progress by month?

I mention plank structures above because that's what Paizo's module says. Although even their own product only lists one building as planks, so they clearly didn't have a lot. It's probably what they brought with them. If I wanted to be incredibly fussy, I'd look at the type of wood available...

Building a settlement from scratch, how much progress by month?

One needs wood for shacks, and that wood needs to be logged. The point of this game is for everything to be primitive. If players won't enjoy that, this is not the campaign for them. The difference between boat 1 and boat 2 is "will you be living in a tent or a temporary structure". Hell...

Building a settlement from scratch, how much progress by month?

Thanks for more details, @TheSword I'm very likely going to be doing what's on the image. That's a fine enough setup, I'm just dialing the clock backwards to see what would be there at every month.

Paizo A question about Paizo/PF adventure design

@kenada I want to reiterate, while PF2 may line up more with my encounter difficulty tastes, it doesn't give me what I want considering I do not intend to play PF, 1e or 2e. I have no horse in this race. The thread's intent is simply to understand "Why are there easy encounters in the module".

Building a settlement from scratch, how much progress by month?

Suitable sites for what? Also, prospecting? Worrying about finding ore before you've even started building housing seems a bit premature. The rest looks sensible.

Building a settlement from scratch, how much progress by month?

I'm asking a message board so I don't need to go to a library.

Building a settlement from scratch, how much progress by month?

(MINOR spoilers for Ruins of Azlant 1 - The Lost Outpost) Currently doing the prep work for a campaign, I'm using some adventure modules to handle frameworks for things I'm unfamiliar with, but I'm looking to change them, and I'm not sure how to gauge things for that. Also "checking the math"...

Getting rid of those pesky forest squatters

If the PCs didn't have family among the squatters (who they'd trust), I'd just get the town so riled up to want to remove them for you. Y'know, frame them for bad things. Barring that, monsters are the solution. Steer local wild monsters towards the camp. The wyvern is a good idea, as is say...

Leveling up with Milestones--how do you handle it?

That's neat. It certainly gives a feeling of higher levels take longer, rather than it being a constant unchanging rate.

Leveling up with Milestones--how do you handle it?

The system I'm using (4e) assumes a level happens every 8-10 encounters. "In practice that ends up being 6-8 encounters, 1 major quest, 1 minor quest". Now IME, a session generally only lasts 2 encounters (and by encounters really I mean Fights, because RP ranges wildly). If all the players are...

Leveling up with Milestones--how do you handle it?

I'd like to play weekly. But that depends on players' availability, which I don't know. I honestly don't have enough experience. All I know is that I generally like starting around level 3. IME most campaigns go 1-3 sessions and then die for whatever reason. I've never had a group that lasted...

    That's the thing: I don't know.

Leveling up with Milestones--how do you handle it?

This does assume you have a really good handle on your scope. Things can be far murkier if you're doing sandboxes, or you're basically plotting by the seat of your pants, or you don't really have much in the way of concrete adventures "Here's the beginning, here's the end point, it has...

Leveling up with Milestones--how do you handle it?

For those who handle "You level up" when it's story convenient or when you feel like it's time, how does that typically play out in your game in terms of number of encounters/sessions/time-played before a level up? How does that usually end up if you were to go back and measure it. Mainly...

Paizo A question about Paizo/PF adventure design

To be clear I don't think that every fight should be "So before we roll initiative, does anyone have a backup character ready?" I just don't like "Oh a combat encounter? I'm gonna go make a sandwich, you guys are good." A little bit of tension is nice. The threat of combat actually produces...

Paizo A question about Paizo/PF adventure design

If all you're saying is "PF1 fights easy, PF2 fights hard", then okay?
