    Maptool Stamps/Items

I personally use Paint.NET as my main image editor, but I have Photoshop Elements as well. I'll point out that if you create a file with a transparent background in either program but then save it as a JPG, you'll get any empty background space filled in with white. If you want it transparent...

D&D 5E Are you happy with D&D Next so far?

I'd need more granularity in the poll options in order to answer accurately. I think the game has potential, given that it's in early playtest form right now. It's fine for a playtest. I'm quite done with it now, and I'll be curious to see what the next batch of playtest stuff adds to the mix...

D&D 4E I would rather not have 4e combat "powers" in D&D Next

That's fine - you don't want any "powers" at all. That's a totally valid opinion, and one I'm glad you articulated. The original post only harped on encounter powers in particular, and there's a difference between "I hope D&D Next gets rid of encounter powers" and "I hope D&D Next gets rid of...

D&D 4E I would rather not have 4e combat "powers" in D&D Next

Well, the game could have powers without having encounter powers. There are at-will and daily powers in 4e as well. Giving the fighter an option other than "melee basic attack" can be done without using encounter powers.

    D&D 2E As a strategy 4e or 2e on classes

I'm a fan of 4e, but I like the idea of having fewer core classes and then effectively have sub-classes through the use of themes and backgrounds. I know I'm in the minority, but I'd be happy if the paladin was a theme of fighter, ranger a theme of rogue or fighter, sorcerer/warlock themes of...

    Group and Swarm Attacks

Sure, except that I run all my games in MapTool. I wasn't saying that this is the solution for everyone! Having some rules for making this reasonable with dice would be good. But since the original post asked for solutions people had come up with in their own games, I shared mine.

    Group and Swarm Attacks

Well, I program up monsters in MapTool and roll dice electronically, so I went ahead and did all of the rolls. I've run the "35 kobolds" fight with two different groups now, and the computer die roller made things go quickly enough.

In your opinion, the VERY BEST adventure product to come out in the last two years.

Here's another vote for Zeitgeist, at least Adventure One (just because I haven't gotten to the next three published adventures yet). My group had a pulse-poundingly good time with the set-piece combats in that adventure, and the players really seemed to feel like they were portraying real...

    Wizards and Armor

Wow... I have never seen such an evenly divided poll! As of this writing, it's 38 votes for "no spells while in armor", 40 votes for "arcane spell failure chance" and 41 votes for "cast freely in armor". If the broader gamer population is so evenly divided on this question, it will be tricky...

What do other RPG designers think?

Interesting. I see this very differently. Maybe I'm too literal on the definition of "amateur" but I understand it to me someone who does something solely for the love of it rather than for money. So, Matt James and Mike Shea would both be professionals in my book. I'm an amateur - I've...

How to actually run a combat encounter?

Running a single encounter isn't going to be that hard if you've been a player, as others have said. Could you grab a couple of friends and actually run this encounter for them? I think that would help you a great deal!

Dungeon Survival Book - any good ?

Wow. Yeah, based on the thread title I was going to come and give my opinions of the book, but the file-sharing question... ugh.

A Classic D&D Option for Every Class

Hmm. Well, having played with and DMed for a lot of the classes that have come out since Heroes of the Fallen Lands, I'd say that your proposal sounds much more like the solution in search of a problem. You already have the solution - the Knight, the Slayer, the Hunter, the Scout, the Skald, the...

    Maps in the Meanwhile

Out of curiosity, have you considered offering a backer level that's PDF-only? I only run games using MapTool (whether online or in-person), so I have no need for physical poster maps, but I'm always interested in high-quality maps that I can drop into my campaigns. Just a thought!

I'm playing a pixie! What class should I be?

Yeah, that was me. Good ol' Crazy Wings! I created the pixie berserker mainly for hilarity. One he gets the Badge of the Berserker, he charges into opponents' spaces all day long. I've only had a chance to play him once so far, but he was a blast.

    Base measurement in DDN

I think the meter/yard square makes so much sense. No more math! "I can move 30 feet; can I reach that guy?" "Well, let's see, 5, 10, 15, 20..." This becomes: "I can move six yards; can I reach that guy?" "1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 - yep, no problem." I can count by ones much more quickly than I can...

Have you been using lighting conditions in the playtest?

I've been dealing with light and my players, yes. Kobolds have disadvantage in bright light, so it's clearly important for them. I ran some players through the goblin / hobgoblin caves, and the limited Light radius was very relevant. The wizard had to start lighting up coins and tossing them...

Attention! You can now run D&D Next games here at ENW's PbP, on Skype, & G+ hangouts

I'm thrilled about this! I'm going to run my Friday night online group through some D&D Next this week instead of War of the Burning Sky.

D&D 4E Good, shortish 4e adventures for the high Heroic Tier?

When you say "published" I'm guessing you mean "published by WotC", in which case I don't have any great suggestions. However, you're welcome to use Descent Into Darkness, one of my free adventures. It works best at high heroic tier. The post with maps and links to the prequels is here, and the...

How are you accessing the D&D Next playtest materials?

I was able to get the material on launch day, so that's been my access point. However, I do personally know of people who have gotten it via emails from friends or via printouts at the game table.
