Rejection for DDI article isn't so bad

Well, I think this is their new approach, in part to avoid what happened to you. A lot of people apparently sent in pitches in the past that were silently rejected. They know that's discouraging, so they've committed to review and comment on every submission by no later than two months after the...

Need Advice - Story Hook "Vision"

I agree with the idea of having an NPC sage of some sort interpret the vision for them as meaning, "This will happen unless you stop it." Another fun idea might be for a wise person to pull out an old tome that tells of past visions from other heroes. Some visions came to fruition while others...

    Newbie Question on Skill Challenges

Short answer: It's all up to the DM. In my own adventures, I tend to run skill challenges more as scenes. For an example, look at page 9 of my Stolen Staff adventure. Each scene requires just one or two skill checks, and then it's over. The DM can pick and choose which scenes to run, but this...

Rejection for DDI article isn't so bad

I know that lots of people are thinking of submitting material to Dungeon or Dragon Magazine now that the submission window is open (October 1 through November 30), so I thought I'd share my experiences with my submission. Full details, including the link to the version of the adventure I...

    Death and Dying

If you are at 7 hit points and take 12 damage, you go to -5 hit points. At this point you are unconscious and dying. If you take 5 more damage (say, from ongoing damage), you are now at -10 hit points. If your negative bloodied value is -15 hit points, you're now 5 hit points from death...

Wotc online monster builder can build monsters from scratch.

Yeah, I have to say that I'm going to keep using Power2ool for my monster creation for now. It's not perfect, but it's better than the Monster Builder. Not that I'm saying the online Monster Builder is terrible; Power2ool is just better.

    Tactical maps from adventures?

In this earlier thread, I posted links to versions of the battlemaps I had created with a 50 pixels per square scale for use in programs like MapTool: http://www.enworld.org/forum/en-publishing/308976-pixels-square-battlemaps.html#post5631968

    Deck of Many Things Replacement

I'm planning on running Madness at Gardmore Abbey for one of my groups in the near future, and I've read through the first of the four books so far (including the description of the Deck of Many Things). Could you talk more about the "campaign killer" nature of the Deck? I didn't see anything in...

    Suggestions for on-line rpg tools

I'm a huge proponent of using MapTool + Skype (as you can see from my blog). MapTool can be very complicated if you want it to be. It can also be very, very simple. If all you want is a shared white board to draw on and drag tokens around on, MapTool can absolutely do that. Just don't use Fog...

    Good DM's?

Get inside the skin of the inhabitants of the game world, and show the players how those inhabitants act. What would the merchant really say or do in this situation? What about the group of bystanders? Very importantly, what would the ENEMIES in a fight do in this situation? Have them say and do...

Where are you buying Mordenkainen's Magnificient Emporium?

I'm probably not buying, since I'm most likely to use the content via the Compendium. I'm a big DDI fan. However, if I did buy it, I would buy from my FLGS. The prices are lousy for other books compared to Amazon et al, but I do believe in supporting the store and the community. The store is...

    What should a DM buy?

For a new-to-D&D 4e DM, here's my list: Musts: Dungeon Master's Kit, Heroes of the Fallen Lands. With these products, you can run a bunch of games and you also get a great adventure, Reavers of Harkenwold. Highly Recommended: Monster Vault, Rules Compendium, DDI subscription, Vinyl mat. I'll...

WotBS WOTBS maps (adventure three and beyond) in .jpg?

I'm guessing that it didn't come as an MPEG, but a .mod file, which Windows thinks is a movie. It's not a movie, though - it's really a zip file. Here is the direct link to the ZIP file with the Chapter 3 maps: http://www.enworld.org/enpublishing/fg2_wotbs_3.zip The steps for unzipping this...

    Power2ool Adds Copy/Paste Support!

I am thinking about slamming my head into my desk right now. I love Power2ool and used it to create the monster cards for my first two adventures. My third adventure has been ready to go for a while, but I was dragging my feet on creating the monster cards in the hope that this function would...

Would you play in this game?

I know that I've had a lot of fun role-playing pre-generated characters before, which is basically what you're talking about here. However, those experiences were all one-shot games for organized play, not an ongoing 10-level campaign. I think I'd get sick of having a pre-gen with all mechanical...

    Themes Index

The other source was a series of articles in Dragon Magazine, I believe in June or July. I believe those were also subscriber-only. These were more general themes rather than being setting-specific.

What is the best Schtick you've ever...

I love Factotum the Bard. This is a character I created for a semi-regular Living Forgotten Realms game, where a particular DM would be running a game every week with the goal being that the same characters would keep playing and leveling up together over time (it sort of worked). Factotum, as...

    September DDI Update news

I'm bummed to hear that there's a 50 monster limit, but the export function means I can probably live with it. My adventures lately have five different versions of every monster (for use at level 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10), which will chew up those 50 slots fast. But I can export and save the XML when...

D&D 4E Abstracting Wealth in 4e: good idea or bad idea?

I went with "not sure" because while I haven't actually tried this yet, I'm intrigued. I ditched tracking XP long ago (instead just leveling up the party as appropriate) so I could see ditching gold as well. There's still the whole idea of keeping track of magic items, but you could go with...

    September DDI Update news

I'm definitely looking forward to trying out the new Monster Builder. I've been using Power2ool as an alternative for a while (I just love the ease of use) but would prefer a tool that lets me store more monsters and also lets me duplicate a monster and modify the duplicate (which Power2ool...
