Why would a DM want a copy of the players character sheet?

My super-fun D&D group has excellent attendence. But every now and then somebody can't make a session. As my DM does not keep copies of character sheets, when somebody (and their character sheet) is missing, we need to have more out-of-character discussions. Like... "Does he know the spell...

Revised Dungeon Master's Guide Cover Online!!

It resembles the other one design-wise, which I'm glad about, yet it's cooler-looking. Very nice! :] TonyM

do the undead continue to decompose?

Back when I DMed (I'm a Player these days), I had zombies last forever. Little chunks of zombie meat (fingers, toes, teeth, etc.) would always fall off my zombies, and those pieces would rot on the floor. However, my zombies would never diminish in size (more than a little), nor rot too much...

    [ot] spotting gamers

Here's how to identify a gamer without disclosing that you are a gamer... Stand near a suspected gamer. Point your finger towards a distant human male and say with a mixture of awe and disbelief, "Is THAT Gary Gygax?" If their head snaps around so fast that dice fall from their pockets...

Kinda changing rules without telling players.

I try to not remind my DM of rules in mid-encounter. But if I slipped and said what your player said in that situation, my DM would have probably replied a little differently. I think he would've somehow interpreted my bafflement about the magic weapon not working properly into my character's...

What does the paladin do when...

That was my thinking, too, Shark. When I said earlier that my paladin prays on round 1, then tries to disbelieve the 'illusion' on round 2, that was my goofy way of not-being-a-good-player to someone not-being-a-good-DM. ME: "GAH! I have to decide who dies--my wife, or my baby?" DM: "YES!"...

What does the paladin do when...

Hmm. I'm running a Paladin, so I'll chime in. I think my Paladin would PRAY the first round for Divine Intervention. After all, the gods 'must' be watching him, otherwise he would not have arrived at the Perfect Moment to foil everything. If nothing happened, my Paladin would spend the next...

    DM Help: Alignment Woes

I'm not a DM these days, I'm a player...so, speaking as someone whose inclination is to side with the Player, I'm thinking this situation sounds like an opportunity for a lot of fun for both of you. I mean, sheesh, there must be a 'hundred' things that can go wrong for the poor...

A game world without dwarves, elves, etc.?

If I was playing in a D&D world without dwarves, elves, gnomes and halflings, I'd probably be a little less 'into' the game. Demi-human races add something valuable to a fantasy world, IMO--even if the PCs seldom come across them. For example, exploring an ancient dwarven mine seems a lot...

Rogues rule! (warning, kinda long and kinda ranting)

I like rogues, too. :] Regarding the anti-rogue sentiment exhibited by other character classes and by 'some' Players, I think that's part of the fun of running a rogue. But it can be a little distressing when it goes too far... Like the time my rogue died in a battle aboard a ship, and...

[Way OT & possibly NC-17 rated] Can men and women "just be friends"?

When I read "old-fashioned in some ways...IE,..." I mistakenly read "IE" as "1E." This made me think, "Yeh, 1st edition really IS old-fashioned." (Haha, I laugh at myself.) Interesting thread, by the way. I agree with Erik Noah 70% and am baffled by the question 30%. Tony M

    I am so angry

Seems to me that one of the DM's responsibilities to the group is to keep the adventure moving along. If the DM feels that enough time has been spent talking about Buffy or whatever, the DM should probably consider getting things back on track. My DM has several subtle (and not so subtle) ways...

    [OT] Your Geekiest Moment

When I'm watching a movie at home, if there's a fight in the movie and if somebody gets hit pretty hard, over and over, but doesn't go down, I sometimes exclaim, "That guy has a LOT of hit points!" While in theatres, I just 'think' it. :] TonyM

    Alternatives to Mats?

I totally agree--drawing rooms in advance is fun for all. Especially when the room is one of those big, strangely-shaped rooms where the best monsters lurk. Markers on big sheets of paper is my preferred method, by the way. * * * Player 1: Short sword drawn, I open the left door of the...
