    Alignment of Choice!

I'm not currently in a game, but I chose "Good" because I usually roll somewhere on that side of the spectrum. For real preference, though, I prefer games where alignment isn't a concern. The notion that the world divides up into gangs like that is a touch simplistic for my tastes. Plus, most...

    [Draconomicon 2] Dragons worshipping gods?

Mercurius, you're probably just going to have to agree to disagree about this one with a lot of people. There's all kinds of precedent in various published settings for gods of dragons, dragons worshiping gods, etc. At worst, you're simply blaspheming against the written word. At best, it...

Fiddly Bits, Power Cards, and Imagination

Relax, Raven. I thought the Homer Simpson reference would establish that I was being at least somewhat tongue in cheek. I'm not calling anyone a liar, but I am a confirmed skeptic. If you do a survey, everyone's kid is above average. If you listen to anecdote's, everyone's game is super...

    [Draconomicon 2] Dragons worshipping gods?

Thus are the risks of using humor on the internet. Not everyone will see it. I think the OP made a valid point about psychological inconsistency, but since he applied some jokes to his presentation of that point, we went off the rails.

Fiddly Bits, Power Cards, and Imagination

Actually, it happens once or twice in a year of gaming, but because it's usually very cool when it does work, by the power of tall tales it becomes commonplace. We had this gamer at my LFGS with the gift of gab. He was 7 foot tall if he was a foot. He had a shock of red hair... etc etc.

Fiddly Bits, Power Cards, and Imagination

I guess since we're talking about Power Cards and such in this thread, I figured we were talking about combat. Besides, I'm one of those people who doesn't really care about most of the non-combat rules. Combat is where I need a random element to adjudicate how things throw down. Skill...

[Those who like 4ed] What has been lost?

Welcome to the boards, Overman. Mechanical, certainly. Possibly overbuilt, even. But I would argue that it is actually much harder for powergamers than previous editions. It is so overbuilt compared to them that it's relatively hard to break.

Fiddly Bits, Power Cards, and Imagination

You could just as easily interpret it with the opposite connotation, in which an excess of creativity is a sign of something wrong with the system. Which is to say, people stay in the box more often in a powers system because there is a lot to do inside the box. It's a neat box with shiny...

Fiddly Bits, Power Cards, and Imagination

In my experience, risk-averse people stick to the tried-and-true, while people who are a little more relaxed about it all are more likely to take chances on DM decisions. If you think of it as a problem, it has come up before. Several people around here have espoused handing out an extra power...

    [Draconomicon 2] Dragons worshipping gods?

If that's how D&D worship really works, Occam's Razor would tell a thinking dragon just to cut out the middle man, wot?

    Dragon Age: Origins

Aye, there's the rub. My current rig won't run it at all. I need a new video card for sure. Buying a new video card makes it into probably a $150 game, possibly more than that. This is where I consider plugging my ears for a year and waiting to pick up the game in a $20 bin after I can more...

    Firefly

Where do I sign up to contribute happy thoughts towards this idea? I believe sufficiently and will clap my hands enthusiastically. Actually, I think a LOT of visual media would be well-served to go a similar route. Star Trek would also work well that way. Not as much need for big-budget WOW...

    Dragon Age: Origins

Haven't even bought the game yet, since I'm waiting to upgrade my computer, but does the HD texture mod up the system requirements much? i.e. if I wanted to use such a thing, is that going to mean buying a better video card?

    Firefly

In theory, I would watch another show set in that world, because I liked the little universe he was setting up. But that cast was phenomenal and accounted for a lot of what I loved about the show.... so it would be approached cautiously at best.

Looking for a game in the Ithaca, NY area

I spotted that one. Unfortunately, my schedule would make that tough, especially since I actually live a bit southeast of Ithaca. Thanks for the heads up, though. It's a possibility, if a bit outside.

    Torchlight

I am entirely of two minds about that. I looked at the Torchlight forums and the intense focus on optimization was a little..... off-putting. I'm enjoying that I can spend my talent points on whatever abilities look the most fun rather than worrying about being competitive with others.

    Firefly

I've never met anyone who found it off-putting. It didn't catch on enough to justify its production costs for two reasons, AFAICT. 1) The bizarre way they aired it. The big networks don't really nurture anything, and Fox is probably the worst of the lot in that regard. 2) The fact that they...

Looking for a game in the Ithaca, NY area

I've been without a game for a long while, and I would love to jump back in to something casual. I'm in my 30s, and fairly busy, so weekly is possible, but I would be just as happy with something every 2 weeks or even monthly. I'm open to various systems, but would prefer something D&D for...

    Torchlight

Discovered this while dealing with a fun little swine flu infection. Wife and I are both addicted now. Minion build alchemists are irritating, however.

    Finding the violent muse

I had a similar problem a ways back. I tended to think about everything in game a LOT. Actually, I do that in general, but I digress. Tell her to try NOT to think. Just have the character do the first thing that pops into her head, before she has a think about its consequences...
