    In Praise of Dice

"Trust at the table is about a lot more than fudging rolls or not." Well said. My players trust me* to have their enjoyment - over the long term - foremost, and to choose the appropriate methods to accomplish that. ...... And when they don't, I poison their cheese puffs.

"All of these things fix problems with rolling when you aren't actually okay with accepting the brute, baseline consequences of a failed roll...and yet all of them respect player agency rather than blowing it off so long as you can lie to them well enough that they falsely believe they have...

Dice make excellent servants but tyrannical masters.

D&D 4E Anyone playing 4e at the moment?

"The offline digital tools actually work better than they did previously especially if you want to add your own custom content which for me is very very D&D" As I recall at the time we managed to get them to work for 2 players PCs and absolutely not work for 4 others. I hope the OP has better...

    In Praise of Dice

I want to interject at this point that I very much appreciate that, even though there are stark (and fascinating) differences in opinion and approach here, everyone is being civil and no one is being personal. Good job internet!

"Often, I think that if the roll is not that important, why roll?" We so agree on that, and (even though it is not a new idea) I think it is the single biggest style adaptation I have made since 5E. If a task is either trivial or impossible, you don't need to ask the players for a roll. Off...

Therefore by the transitive property, all DMs are Steve Buscemi.

D&D 5E What are your D&D buying habits?

Should there have been an option for "...and also 3rd party material"?

D&D 4E Anyone playing 4e at the moment?

We had a great 4E campaign for pretty much the entire supported length of the edition. And by halfway through we found character creation/updating/use absolutely unfeasible without the digital tools. As always YMMV but just be aware it can be an issue.

    In Praise of Dice

It is trivially important whether players have agency. It is vitally important whether players BELIEVE they have agency. I have no moral objection to lying to the players, consistently continually and with a straight face, if it adds to their enjoyment. As DM I am first and foremost an...

    In Praise of Dice

Do you feel deceived by a stage magician because what they are doing is trickery and fakes, or entertained by the spectacle? The person with the top hat and the rabbits, pretending to saw the assistant in half? That's the DM. As long as the audience is entertained, the number of trapdoors and...

    In Praise of Dice

"Would it be ok if a casino fudged the dice on the players? There is an element of trust here; challenge, risk, and reward. All that." If the casino fudged the dice so that the players won more often and had a better time? Yeah, I think most people would be good with that.

    In Praise of Dice

"Why roll if you aren't committed to accepting the result?" To convince the players that the outcome was dependent on their skill and a little luck, rather than deus autem post screen. D&D is entertainment. It doesn't matter what's true, it only matters what they believe. Dice are a tool to...

    In Praise of Dice

On the original topic: there was a kickstarter a couple of years ago for dice where the basic premise can be summed up as "Look, these aren't made of any fancy material. They don't have thematic designs. They aren't even any better balanced than common dice. BUT they have nice bright primary...

    In Praise of Dice

DM "Fudging" dice are a direct result of players investing hours of time crafting characters, writing backstories, downloading portraits, 3-D printing miniature and (bringing it on topic) buying the perfect custom dice set for their character. If you gank them with a wandering monster ogre...

D&D 5E What House Rules Can You NOT Live Without?

Opportunity attacks against targets getting up from prone or picking up a weapon off the ground. It makes actions that disarm an opponent or knocks them prone more viable, and lends a nice little extra tactical consideration. (As an aside, having played every edition, I find 5E is the one where...

D&D General What editions of Dungeons & Dragons do you like?

I mostly want to take the pieces I like from the editions I've played and slap them onto 5e. I know! It's just so frustrating that The High Council of Gaming prevents us from doing that.
