Sage Advice: Jeremy Crawford on Ability Checks & What They're Not

I don't think there is a direct link for articles of a particular kind (not that I can find, anyway). From what I can tell you need to go to the All Articles page and then select Sage Advice from the Narrow By drop down menu on that page.

Sage Advice: Jeremy Crawford on Ability Checks & What They're Not

In principle, sure; in practice, it's going to creep in there to some degree.

Sage Advice: Jeremy Crawford on Ability Checks & What They're Not

You have a point about resources, which is why I think the counter game is one that would come to the fore towards the end of the second tier onwards as increased resources become available. As for wasting counterspells on trivial magic, I'd argue that in situations where a caster would...

Sage Advice: Jeremy Crawford on Ability Checks & What They're Not

I wasn't necessarily advocating for the position in my post, I was just working through it based on what I could find in the books in response to the point raised in the Sage Advice column. Having said that, I don't think it's more reasonable that the knowledge of which spell is being cast is...

Sage Advice: Jeremy Crawford on Ability Checks & What They're Not

I'm not so sure. The spell description states that you "attempt to interrupt a creature in the process of casting a spell". So, for example, while a Shield spell would be cast as a reaction to seeing the incoming Magic Missile bolt(s), a Counterspell would be cast before the spell has launched...

    D&D 5E D&D in the news!

A few errors, a few cringes, but still better than I expected. I liked the emphasis on the social aspects of the game - often overlooked by those who haven't tried it. As an aside, Clem Bastow, with ear prosthetics, no less? Consider me surprised (in a good way).

    D&D 5E Damaging Armor

I think it'd be fine to allow mending to fix the damaged shields and armour and wouldn't make it irrelevant: there is the risk that a character could take multiple hits during the combat. Taking enough hits to lose armour doesn't seem too likely; losing a shield, however, could be - characters...

    D&D 5E Damaging Armor

Oozes also use a similar mechanic to handle item damage (weapons, in that case) so I think this option would be a consistent choice.

D&D 5E The fall from grace of the longsword

Putting aside all the real world combat reasoning, looking at this from the perspective that 5E harks back to older editions in many areas I don't find it odd. This would probably be a bridge too far for most, but you could wind the clock even further back and have all weapon attacks use the...

D&D 5E Mapping tool--what's the current state of the art?

It's certainly not state of the art, but I recall being able to do this with HexMapper when I last looked at map software a few years back.

D&D 5E Blindsight Discussion: What Crawford tweeted

I guess this a legacy of 3E: an expectation that the rules will provide an exacting mechanical coherency that is akin to the physical laws of the game world, the workings of which can be deduced from a thorough reading of the rules rather than lending itself to interpretation. At first I...

D&D 5E Any News On The 5e Video Game Front?

Looking back to 3E, I think Neverwinter Nights was the first CRPG based on the ruleset and that was about two years after the 3E rules released. Even disregarding the other issues they're still ironing out for 5E (third parties, etc.), I don't expect to see a 5E CRPG anytime soon.

D&D 5E The woes of the elf and his longsword

It's a matter of legacy over mechanical coherence. That said, if the intended flavour behind the idea is that elves - and dwarves, I suppose, which I think are the only other race that get racial weapon proficiencies - tend to have some proficiency with a number of martial weapons, I'd sooner...

    D&D 5E BAM: Where's 5E??

Oddly enough, the first book I'd probably check out is the one on the bottom shelf that is spine up, just because I can't tell at a glance what it is (too tall for the shelf?).

D&D 5E Describe for me a City of Illusion

At last. After many trials, and still more tribulations, I had everything I would need to gain entry to Rhith - the fabled gnomish city of illusion. In a quaint forest clearing, precisely where I am under oath not to divulge, I proceeded with the spells, rituals and pass phrases required to...

D&D 5E Moonbeam, Am I reading it right?

I think justifying that interpretation is getting into the realm of semantic gymnastics when a simpler interpretation suggests itself. It may be more productive to compare Moonbeam with the damage-on-move interpretation to similar 2nd-level spells and see how it would compare over the course of...

D&D 5E Moonbeam, Am I reading it right?

The way I read it there are only two circumstances in which Moonbeam is intended to do damage: 1. a creature starts its turn in the area of effect, 2. the first time a creature enters the area of effect on a particular turn. The first case is straightforward. The second, combined with the...

D&D 5E Question about classes and spells

Go ahead with it, but perhaps talk with the player about the possibility that you may need to revise the decision if it ends up causing problems later on.

D&D 5E How do you run Warding Bond and Protection from Energy or Poison combination

It seems like a deliberate choice to state that the recipient gets damage resistance and the caster takes the same amount of damage as the recipient, rather than just stating that damage dealt to the recipient is split between recipient and caster. My guess is that it's intentional. As you've...
