Edition wars...a GOOD thing? or if not, an APPROPRIATE thing?

Asking out of honest curiosity, what tangible benefits are achieved by raging, raging against the dying of the light (if I may stretch your metaphor)? edit: because honestly, I have no interest in seeing General RPG Discussion becoming the 3.5 Wailing Wall.

Serenity: Why am I GMing this?

Honestly, I'd run Serenity exactly as I would run Eberron. Bunch of guys (veterans from the losing side of the Last War, a couple of rogues and People-With-Shadowy-Pasts™) ride around in a ship, getting into adventures in places just outside the law's jurisdiction. Halfway through the...

    Come and (Don't) Get It?

Perhaps I've played a Warlord too long---thus warping my brain into some fantastic rationalizations of the scope of the Martial power source---but I've always fluffed Come And Get It as: You are not forcing your opponent's movement. Rather, your battle instincts have been so keenly honed that...

What D&Disms have you never liked?

They're humans with flair and elves with balls. What's not to like?

    What Edition to use 3!

If I understand you correctly (and the good people at Dewar's Distillery may have a thing or two to say about that), you are looking at a character whose powers evolve in direct relation to the powers of those he defeats. 4th comes closest, with the caveat that you would be using the Monster...

Is too much "kitchen sink" possible?

I'm probably in the minority, but I'd say no. My "world" is the built upon the skeletal framework of the default 4e Points of Light. I've added my own stamp to it, added power players and over-arching plots, but essentially I've left it as generic as I could in order to enable my players to...

    I'm getting Edition War fatigue

As someone whose *very own words* were quoted in a 4e-hater's .sig for like a year, let's just say I have a sore spot for that kind of stupidity.

    I'm getting Edition War fatigue

Really? Most of the conflict I've seen has been instigated by implications that those who play [X] edition are hidebound and irrational, while those who prefer [X+1] edition are intellectually inferior. And let's be honest for a moment: the second slander has been raised *far* more often (even...

    What defines "D&D?"

    1. Medieval trappings. Modern sensibilities 2. Adventurers: unemployed people wandering around looking for trouble but never paying taxes or having kids or anything. 3. Monsters who turn into gold when they you kill them. 4. Elves and Dwarves and other Tolkien stuff. 5. Underground complexes...

Edition wars...a GOOD thing? or if not, an APPROPRIATE thing?

*calls bookie to get the over/under on an edition war breaking out in this very thread*

Edition wars...a GOOD thing? or if not, an APPROPRIATE thing?

What if they threw an edition war and nobody came?

What D&Disms have you never liked?

In all fairness, Drizzt's crossover appeal brought two new players into our game---both of whose only exposure to D&D was reading the Dark Elf Trilogy.

What D&Disms have you never liked?

Note that I also disliked 2e's dual-wield Ranger rule. I just didn't think it was iconic enough a D&Dism to call out in this thread. But since it has survived into every subsequent edition, perhaps I was mistaken ;)

What D&Disms have you never liked?

AD&D Unearthed Arcana: Dark elves do not gain the combat bonuses of the surface elves with regard to sword and bow, but may fight with two weapons without penalty, provided each weapon may be easily wielded in one hand. Salvatore used existing D&D rules to make the single most famous...

    I'm getting Edition War fatigue

The worst of the Crusaders (on both sides) have either emigrated, been exiled, or have beaten their swords to plowshares. But a few former soldiers have taken to banditry---setting fires in the occasional thread but not disturbing the Kings Peace enough to draw the Mods from behind their walls...

What D&Disms have you never liked?

Alignment. Especially alignment codified into the rules system. Heroes expected to despoil the bodies of everything they kill (interestingly, 4e's treasure system has effectively ended this practice in my group) Experience Points. I'd rather just grant a level after each story. Traps. Luke...

    That really is excellent advice.

    4e Buyers remorse

I'm not skeptical, only surprised. I guess my disconnect is, the OP claims that he prefers a more 'wing it' style. So I would imagine that would require *less* prep-time, not more. ;) In my a pinch, I can run a perfectly good 4e pick-up game with an open Monster Manual, some 1" grid paper, and...

    4e Buyers remorse

Wow! You are honestly the first DM I've come across whose prep-time increased with 4e. If you'd like some tips (provided you are still running it, of course), I'd be happy to help! The only way to know is to ask them. One thing OD&D clones are definitely good for is quick prep and play!
