    Fudging for fun and profit.

As I said earlier, I give myself some leeway with monster hitpoints. If the party is down to at-wills and I make my detect boredom check, then the monster is going to lose some HPs. But defenses, powers and attacks? Play 'em like written (which is easy, since I calibrate all of those values...

    Fudging for fun and profit.

Yep. When I was a kid, discovering my father was letting me win in Stratego hurt far worse than losing games to my cheating little brother.

    Who Else likes the Cantina?

*Love* the Cantina. My vision of the "Points of Light" setting is so multi-cultural that homogeneous communities are things of the past, and those few that remain are cultural throwbacks, treated with curiosity (and distaste).

    Combat length

Our group: 4 characters + 1 Companion 16th level combats: 1 to 1.5 hours 17th level combats: 45 minutes The difference was a new DM who cut down table talk, uses DnD4eCM like a pro (a computer hooked up to a 52" LCD screen helps), and enforces a 15 minute break every 2 hours. Twice the...

New Ampersand - future stuff (DDi)

Honestly, with the full DDI suite, every single bit of crunch in all my books can be invalidated and I don't think I would care. Heck, our group hasn't cracked a book to look up a rule since the Compendium was released. The fluff, thankfully, never gets updated. ;)

    Fudging for fun and profit.

[addendum to previous post] While I roll in the open and play 'em where they lie, I often invoke Schrödinger's Monster ("there's no such thing as a fixed Hit Point total once the players get bored").

Official Rules Updates (March 02, 2010)

Between Blood Pulse and Winged Horde, our resident Wizard wept bitter, bitter tears. Sooooo delicious.

Does your DM hide their rolls?

Out in the open, like everyone else.

    Fudging for fun and profit.

In the past, I would find myself fudging the occasional roll to either keep things moving or add a little tension. Now? Never. I (and the other three DMs in our 4e group) roll everything right on the table like everyone else.

Dear 4e, Please Stop with the Horrible Portmanteaus!

I kinda dig it too. They also make the default 4e world a little more distinct from others. /fanboy

    Battle standard on a wagon

Of course. You move it, you lose it.

    Battle standard on a wagon

Agreed---as long as the action economy remains (Standard to activate, Standard to remove), then I see no problem with planting it on a cart.

Thunderstaff - Wizard L5 daily powerl

One time use---but pretty useful nonetheless. Dude moves within 2 of you and you blast him. You cast the spell and immediately blast him 5 squares away from you. If you hit, then he's dazed, meaning he only has whatever movement remaining in his action, then he's done. Sweet! If you miss...

Best Five RPG Books You Own

I can pull any of these books off the shelf and read them for pleasure and inspiration. They are some of the handful of books that survived the Great eBay Purge of 2007. Call of Cthulhu, fifth Edition Shadowrun first edition Buffy the Vampire Slayer Revised Core Rulebook Advanced Dungeons &...

Power Cards, Cheat Sheets, and the Wii: Why I want legal PDFs

[slight tangent] I would *happily* pay a few bucks a month to be able to access the just the Compendium on XBox Live.

    The Grab-Bag Party!

This reminds me of an idea I had for the post-Scales of War adventure I was planning: a mini campaign where each player picked "Quick Character" from the Character Builder. One click and you have a completely random PC ready to play.

    What would you rule?

Precisely 100% verbatim what I would have ruled.

    I've experienced D&D4

So very true! 4e has taken my group of 5 players and turned 4 into new, enthusiastic DMs. No other game---ever---has done the same.
