Reducing the number of encounters in a day

I'm not sure I've ever seen 8 combats in a single day in any non-computer version of D&D. Given that 6-8 is probably unrealistic for most campaigns, I view the 6-8 comment in the dmg as fiction. f

OotA Magic Items AL Legality *spoilers*

While I agree that the Wand of Orcus has balance issues and shouldn't be in a PC's possession in campaign like AL, why are people claiming the adventure takes the Wand away from the PCs? The adventure explicitly states that the Wand instantaneously attunes to the PC that picks it up. Chapter...

    D&D 5E Wand of Wonder?

in Ad&d, it was a wand anyone could use. and there were often combats where a character had nothng else they could do. in contrast, 5e is designed so that you can always do something.

D&D 5E Why do (non-deadly) traps exist in your campaign?

Dont forget that the wizard or his familiar or his flunkies may accidentally set the trap off. That wizard may be very happy that the trap is non fatal. What if a fey creature casts an illusion on the wizard and he no longer looks like himself. You dont want to be killef by your own trap.

    D&D 5E 5e .

5e wizards are the most powerful wizards D&D has seen yet (not counting splat books). d6 hit points instead of d4. quarter staff can be used in one hand. Can wear heavy armor with no chance of spell failure (with proficiency and sufficient strength). spell components simplified...

    D&D 5E Killing a Teammate

The Intellect Devourer's ability doesn't say how long the intelligence points are gone, whether its permanent or whether they come back after time. I think you could easily rule that one point of intelligence is returned after a long rest or a week or whatever. You could also have a wandering...

D&D 5E Am I reading the Mind Flayer attack right?

Is this actually in the rules somewhere or is this an interpretation? If we're just interpreting, we could just as easily rule: 1) grapple ends due to forced movement; 2) No forced movement (not being repelled) due to grapple; or 3) both grappling parties get repelled some amount of distance...

    D&D 5E Running a single player campaign?

I think the action economy is going to be hard to predict right now. You'll just have to see how it goes in actual play.

D&D 5E Older dragons don't seem to do much damage.

Dragons being buffed was a common 1e request. Dragon #50 was full of alternative ideas for making your dragon tougher. In an AD&D campaign I played in during 1982, (which included Arduin Grimoire rules) there was a red dragon with over 1000 hit points.

D&D 5E [GUIDE] My Word Is My Sword: The Paladin Guide

I slightly modified the Oath of Devotion build to show what I have in mind. Another alternative to variant human would be a half-elf with Chr 16, str 16, con 16, dex 10, wis 8, int 8 and picking up shield master at level 4). I also picked some of the Smites over spells that were in the other...

D&D 5E [GUIDE] My Word Is My Sword: The Paladin Guide

So I've been thinking about playing a 5e Paladin of Devotion. Most likely be a human or variant human. I want to fight on mount from time to time, but expect that the GM will have us inside more often than outside. For fighting style, I see two choices that appeal to me: Option 1: Great...

D&D 5E Older dragons don't seem to do much damage.

Did his calculations include dragon fear? That is a dragon's best weapon against large numbers of enemies. Assume clear terrain. The archers are either at long range (over 120') or within 120'. 19/20 of the archers within 120' have disadvantage due to being frightened (1/20 of the archers...

D&D 5E For those with experience on OotA: Getting rid of travel rate (and tips on time management overall)

I haven't run it yet, but my plan is to let the players decide the pace (fast, medium, slow), but I plan to do all the die rolls for navigation, getting lost, etc. before the game session to calculate travel time in between encounters. So I might have 3 days inbetween encounter a and b if they...
