D&D 5E Where does the punitive approach to pc death come from?

1st level and higher levels were closer together in AD&D than they are in more recent versions. If half of the party was 1st level, it was not a big deal to restart at 1st level if your 2nd level or 3rd level veteran character died. Yes, there were times when my low level character was the...

[Complete Divine] Radiant Servant of Pelor is too powerful.

Welcome to the message boards. And No we didn't forget about PHB 2, PHB 2 wasn't out until two years after this thread was posted. This was a 2004 thread.

BBEG advice... How to deliver good BBEG?

Consider borrowing from other sources. Fiction, gaming, etc. For example, in World of Warcraft, Arthas was all over Ice Crown in various cut scenes, but we didn't really get to fight him until the very end of Ice Crown Citadel. Another example in World of Warcraft, in the Trial of the...

GIANTSLAYER Adventure Path Is Nearly Here!

I re-subscribed for this AP. The first issue is pretty good.

    Second Darkness Adventure Path

3 out of 5 rating for Second Darkness Adventure Path The big problem with many adventure paths is that there are different authors who don't read each other's modules before writing their own contribution. As a consequence, APs feel like six loosely connected stories instead of a single story...

Pathfinder Society Has A New Core Campaign

I don't understand the replay option. Once you've played a murder mystery, why would you play it again under different rules? Sure, you are playing it with a different character, but you still know that "the butler did it."

    Lycanthrope (This bites)

I'm not sure where you are going with Q1. Q2: MM3.5 only allows natural lycanthropes to pass on lycanthropy, so an afflicted wererat can't infect other humans with the disease. Q3: The unaware lycanthrope is essentially a different character ("animal"). Once the character is an aware...

    D&D 3E/3.5 Flavourful Tweaks (3e/4e/PF especially)

You can also do something similar with magic items by calling them mutations or magical abilitites instead of gear. Instead of having a +2 giant strength belt, your character has been magically mutated to have the strength of an ogre. From a mechanics perspective, you still have the...

    Xp Problem

The XP formula is very flexible. You can decide how much XP to reward them. In AD&D (1e), XP was based on headcount (you killed x monsters of this type) and gold. In 3e, gold doesn't matter any more, and even monster type is not as important. It is more about the encounter challenge. You...

    Help with Ease of gameplay

How did it go with the NPC cleric/healer? My personal opinion is that I prefer to avoid NPCs as long-term party members ... i.e. NPCs are ok as quest-givers, and potential short-term party help, but do not participate in the long term.

    Whither the artifacts?

Google is your friend. Mace of St. Cuthbert and Orbs of Dragonkind are on the same page in the DMG 3.5 as the hand and eye of Vecna. Sword of Kas is on the next page. Baba Yaga's Hut was in an issue of dungeon, I believe. Some of the others were in dungeon or dragon.

MERP for flavor, Rules whatever I highly recommend MERP sourcebooks for flavor. For Rule, I'd go with whatever you are comfortable with.

    D&D 3E/3.5 Issue with "Core" 3.5?

low - mid levels with only one splat book per player "If you stay under level 13, and keep away from the supplements, the game really isn't that bad." I run my 3.5E campaign so the PCs max out at level 12. The players are allowed to use one optional book each. I've found that although a...

    Expedition to Castle Ravenloft

The Good: I really like the multiple shrines concept (although the actual shrine bonuses were sort of "meh"). The different motivations/goals from the cards of Ravenloft are great. The different factions are good ... Strahd, were-wolves, vistani, hags, etc. General Ravenloft setting, etc. The...

D&D 3E/3.5 are old Living Greyhawk modules avaiable anywhere?

I'm running a home campaign set in Living Geoff (part of Living Greyhawk). I played in the original campaign for several years. I thought the adventures were fantastic. Yes, the modules are constrained somewhat due to the "Living" aspects ... i.e. each module can't assume that players...

If all the designers who left WotC...

I agree that Magic and the collectible card game industry sent a ton of revenue into gaming stores. However, I think we'd still have gaming stores, just different games. Avalon Hill and D&D would have been fine without MtG. Although they wouldn't be owned by WOTC today.

    Barbarian question

If you like to cleave, I would recommend the Great Cleave feat. Great Cleave works best with a great sword, great axe, falchion, or other two handed weapon. If your barbarian does not multi-class, power attack, cleave, great cleave could be your first three feats. A multi-class...

    Feat requirement: Dodge

I look at the dodge feat and similar feats as being a PrC tax, in that you have to have the feat and Dex 13 in order to take the PrC. Some other PrCs require other feats with other stat requirements (Power Attack requires Str 13, etc.).

"Focus on shorter games"? I'm excited

As characters become higher level, the game will slow down as combats take longer. I recently started a 3.5 campaign. Combats at 1st and 2nd level were extremely fast. I expect combats at higher level to take much longer.
