What do you need to know? With the assumption of magic items being removed from the math, you can start them off with as much (or as little) gold as you want. Heck, you could even still just make them roll on the initial wealth chart. The only thing I can see to watch out for is monster...

I've jealously held on to that pdf just for those tables. I won't use them, exactly, but they provide inspiration (and thus advantage on my NPC's attacks, right?).

An NPC in my game dual wields elven leafblades. They're just rapiers that do slashing damage instead of piercing.

The unicorn's regional effects seem like they'd be a good steal.

No, but it does do a lot to offset the penalty for using Great Weapon Mastery's -5 to-hit, +10 damage mode.

As an aside on swarms: Last game, I actually got to utter the sentence, "Well, mechanically, this counts as 44 swarms of poisonous snakes." Oddly enough, they chose not to try and clear the Indiana Jones-esque snake pit.

Just rolled up a character for the heck of it. All choices involved were made randomly. I ended up with a anthropomorphic bug who is nigh unkillable with a 22 Con, loads of Hit Points, super-high AC and a Panacea Injector he can almost use. Oh, and all his other stats are in the 7-8 range, so...

This has been my experience as well.
