Yes in some ways Eldritch Knight is a multi-class without multi-classing but why the BM is innadequate as a Warlord and (even a better written) PDK probably would be too... is because a multi-class is not going to reflect the archetype of one of its parent nearly as well as the full thing. Oh...

The warlord style ones generally feel more like sidekick ones LOL... the ability to affect the entire team is missing. I do understand when people say "just like the Eldritch Knight would make a less than satisfying Wizard the Battlemaster makes a less than satisfying Warlord".

Level up uses exertion points... pretty interesting. I personally like tricks which if an enemy sees the trick it has disadvantage if you try and repeat it, obvious tricks (like a come and get it) can only be used once per set of enemies, period.

The skill challenge is rather this in abstract... you could have bursts of speed for athletics and sustaining for endurance and acrobatics for navigating obstacles and streetwise for city based shortcuts and so on... open ended of course.
