D&D 4E Running player commentary on PCat's 4E Campaign - Heroic tier (finished)

#1 Sounds like a great game. I may steal large parts of it! Nice writing! #2 Somewhat off topic: I don't think Armour of Agathys can hurt allies. Mark

    Regarding ammo

In the overall spirit of 4e, we ignore ammo. :)

Off the Farm (Forked Thread: Telling a story with 4th Edition)

Thanks! I'm _really_ happy with the adventure I've written. We'll see how it stands up to meeting the players :-) If things go well, I'm going to publish it in some form. We'll see.... Best of luck!

Off the Farm (Forked Thread: Telling a story with 4th Edition)

I find them significant for story-telling purposes. The ability to throw "fireballs" around at-will seems pretty significant from a story viewpoint. Being able to do it only once makes the character seem more "normal" to me. And just removing the only controller from the game (wizard) isn't...

Teleportation as forced movement: off a cliff?

Eh. Forced teleports were probably a bad idea. I personally would probably allow it to move folks to unsafe spaces that a slide could move them to. And allow the same save a slide would allow. Why? Because as I read it, a forced teleport is just a fancy slide.

Off the Farm (Forked Thread: Telling a story with 4th Edition)

Certainly, you can scale up the NPCs of the world. But I don't think 4e at first level has a feeling of being a farmer just off the field. And I think that was planned and intentional. Folks can teleport, throw blasts of flame all day, fire two arrows at rapid speed, cure wounds all day, be...

Off the Farm (Forked Thread: Telling a story with 4th Edition)

My plan was: At-wills become encounter powers Encounter powers become dailies. Dailies go away. This includes most class powers. So marking by a fighter is an encounter thing, healing word is daily. Some class powers, like +1 to attack etc. go away. Remove 1 level of HPs. Skills and stats stay...

Off the Farm (Forked Thread: Telling a story with 4th Edition)

I've not seen a group of 1st level characters feel threatened by a small group of kobolds. Our 1st level parties really haven't struggled with things like that. Heck, look at the encounter with Irontooth which _is_ a very challenging encounter for a 1st level party. There are something like...

Off the Farm (Forked Thread: Telling a story with 4th Edition)

Certainly, though others have already hit on some of the points. My main game, which I've run off-and-on since 1990 under 2e, 3e, 3.5e, and RuneQuest, has the players start in a small village largely as farmers. Even the casters generally come from the village. The party is sent to find the...

Telling a story with 4th Edition

Well... It's a bit weird in that the characters gain very little in the way of non-combat abilities outside of rituals. I'm a world builder, so I think of world design and story design as being closely intertwined. Keep that bias in mind. Things you need to think about: The use of magic...

Opportunity Attacks/Threaten with no melee weaponry?

I allow it the unarmed OA. Don't see a problem with it. And a fighter (if he is using a bow or something) actually might have a fair chance of hitting and certainly causes some interesting effects (stopping the opponent's move being the biggy). Let the PCs _do_ things. It's the 4e way. Mark

    What heroes games are there?

Champions can work well here, but it takes some effort. The skill system is cool because you really can make a "batman" like character that's fairly balanced with actual "supers". This makes having one-or-two supers mixed in with a group of highly skilled "normals" viable. Keep it around...

D&D 4E [4e] Readied Slow vs. Double Move

I think the intent is that you can take one move then the next. So in this case, I'd argue that you need not "declare a double move" at the start of your first move action. So yes, I'd let them take the second move of 2. Mark

4e 3rd party publisher of modules?

    Thanks all!

4e 3rd party publisher of modules?

Is there anyone out there publishing 3rd party 4e adventures? If so, what do people think of them? I'm finding the WotC modules to be a bit light on roleplaying, so I thought I'd look around a bit. Thanks, Mark

Large and larger: what does it take to fall?

Thanks! That seems, well, odd. Can a large creature therefor chose to stand in a place so that only one square is on the ground? That seems odd, and even worse for a huge creature.

Large and larger: what does it take to fall?

Say you've got a large creature. And say it gets pushed to a point that one of the 4 squares it occupies is open space (a pit or whatever). Does it fall? What if 2 or 3 squares are open space?

How Many Battles Per Gaming Session?

Yeah, I was going to say we average about 1 per hour. Some combats are really short (5 minutes for one) some long. Very long. We had to stop at an hour into the most recent and I think we have 45 minutes left... Mark

    THis monster balanced?

#1 Most agree that the Needlefang swarm is way too powerful. #2 That other brute also sounds like too much. So maybe my sense is off here. #3 The blindness is huge. It just has to shift and you get hosed bad. I agree I might be overreacting, but I think it's too much by quite a bit...
