Trying to Describe "Narrative-Style Gameplay" to a Current Player in Real-World Terms

I haven’t read the whole thread, so I’m not familiar with all the pushback. My point is if the game is about X (insert jargon for X here), but it provides Y and Z that don’t really (or always) go with X, then it seems a little weird. I’m looking at it from a “how is this put together...

Trying to Describe "Narrative-Style Gameplay" to a Current Player in Real-World Terms

I haven’t read the thread because I don’t have much time for ENW lately (due open source contribution stuff, new baby, etc). I had a conversation with my brother recently about the difference between D&D 5e and Blades in the Dark. He’s never played a tabletop RPG before but was interested due to...

    Paizo Paizo Updates Pathfinder/Starfinder Licenses

That’s what I’m not sure about. I interpreted “full rights” to mean also having the right to disallow others from making derivative works outside the store, which you don’t have over the original CC-BY content. The DM’s Guild licensing information page also implies you can’t use it there.

D&D General Hot Take: Dungeon Exploration Requires Light Rules To Be Fun

I tried to make it work, but I ultimately found PF2 lacking for what I wanted out of exploration. It wasn’t due to system complexity but what it and the tools it does have both lacked.

    Paizo Paizo Updates Pathfinder/Starfinder Licenses

I wondered the same thing except for CC-BY. Would it be possible to use the 5.1 SRD? I’m not sure.

    Paizo Paizo Updates Pathfinder/Starfinder Licenses

I don’t think one could use a license to a third party’s material to work around the terms of the agreement. In particular, section 8.c requires the work be yours or you to have full rights to it. I’d definitely suggest talking to a lawyer before trying something like that. The terms of an...

    Paizo Paizo Updates Pathfinder/Starfinder Licenses

How? Here is the agreement. To allow someone to use their material, a publisher would have to agree to the terms of Pathfinder Infinite and contribute their material as User Generated Content, making it Program IP. Once a work is Program IP, it can only be distributed on Pathfinder Infinite...

    Paizo Paizo Updates Pathfinder/Starfinder Licenses

There are two issues. The first is the Community Use Policy, which is no longer available. Its replacement does not work with OGL content, and the platform where you should publish will also not be available to OGL content. If you were trying to keep PF1 or SF1 alive, doing conversions, etc; you...

    Paizo Paizo Updates Pathfinder/Starfinder Licenses

It’s actually worse in a key way: you can’t publish RPG products. Content like Wayfinder would have to be published on Pathfinder Infinite, which means they lose control of their work (because the terms are similar to the DM’s Guild, which prohibits publishing your content elsewhere), but it...

    Paizo Paizo Updates Pathfinder/Starfinder Licenses

I don’t think that’s right. The change is that publishers will no longer be allowed to use the OGL for new content. Starting September 1, you must use the Infinite license. Next month, with the release of Pathfinder Player Core 2, we’ll have completed the 18-month task of divesting our core...

Does Your Campaign Have a BBEG? Does it Need One?

The campaign I am running does not have a BBEG. It’s not about thwarting someone else’s plans. It’s about what the PCs are doing. For anyone interested, I try to post recaps in the five words commentary thread. The things that drives threats are their goals and motivations. Natalia (a vampire...

    D&D (2024) Let's call it 5.24

I’ve variously referred to it as the 2024 edition or as the 5e revision, but lately I’ve been lazy and using 5r.

    Origins Experiences

Based on this and some of the other follow-up posts, I’d agree something was off about that game. The CoC game I played didn’t feature a lot of agency: there were a couple of scenes of creepy stuff for us to poke, an obstacle course, and the final scene where monsters attacked; but players still...

    Origins Experiences

I played in a con Call of Cthulhu at Origins pre-pandemic (when Rogue Cthulhu was still a thing). It was a railroad where your character got killed at the end. I figured that was the point. I don’t think I’ve ever played a con game that wasn’t to some degree. (I thought the Call of Cthulhu game...

What should I do at Origins Game Fair 2024

I usually end up spending most of my time hanging out in the board room, and I’ll probably do that again this year. Someone is going to be running High Frontier, though we don’t know if he’ll be doing it in the board room or as an actual event. I’d like to play a full game of that. (I’d wanted...

Is it possible to hide a thread?

Other XenForo boards support hiding threads, but the functionality is either not enabled or requires a plugin that’s not installed. While I wouldn’t mind hiding some threads (like the ones about AI crap), I understand there’s limited bandwidth to make those kinds of changes, and there may not be...

How Do You Feel About Published Adventures as a GM?

The distinction I’ve been making lately is between facts and speculation. A fact is something like: the castle has this layout and these rooms (and perhaps these schedules). Functionally in play, it’s primarily useful as a tool for having things to say when the PCs go to that location...

How Do You Feel About Published Adventures as a GM?

I like Necrotic Gnome’s adventures (and also here). Murder in Baldur’s Gate is my favorite 5e adventure. None of these are very heavy on plot or what the PCs should do. They tend to be open-ended in how PCs can approach and interact with them. I ran some Pathfinder APs. We liked Kingmaker quite...
