D&D 5E What DM flaw has caused you to actually leave a game?

But that's just false, and clearly against the spirit of the game. The fluff of the class has no mechanical impact except in very rare instances. In Pathfinder 2nd edition if you do certain things that are offensive to the Gods (for a cleric) or nature (for a druid) then you lose your powers...

    D&D 5E Treantmonk's Guide to Everything Xanathar

I don't know if someone has lobbied for the shepherd druid yet, but I disagree with the rating. I find that, as a moon druid, my concentration is always best used on a bunch of summons except in very specific situations. Those situations tend to be, more often than not, one of these: 1. There...

    D&D 5E Treantmonk's Guide to Everything Xanathar

No problem! I was surprised too, it really improved the maelstrom spell. Regarding healing spirit, I'd call it blue simply because I think it's the "best in class" spell of its kind. Sure, combat healing might not be great in this edition, but healing spirit is among the most cost effective...

    D&D 5E Treantmonk's Guide to Everything Xanathar

A couple notes. I would rate the healing spirit higher than you have, it's possibly the best out of combat heal in the game. A lot of people (not me) think it should be nerfed, and nerfed hard. I'd also note that on maelstrom you should reread the description. It now works on the ground -or-...

D&D 5E How viable is 5E to play at high levels?

Honestly, I think the rules as written can work fine. Things get strained if rests are too easy, and if magic items are handed out too freely, but even then a clever DM can make things very challenging. The problem is most DMs don't play monsters in an intelligent way, even the ones that should...

D&D 5E Point Buy vs Rolling for Stats

It's more of a superhero title than a military rank or designation that I am in charge of a ship. Think of it in the Tick's voice. "Captaaaain Paaaanda!" Though to reply to getting used to the bile being thrown around, I kind of hope not. It's not something I've seen a lot in actual play.

D&D 5E Point Buy vs Rolling for Stats

Wow, 49 pages of hostility. It's amazing how much pointless bickering over minutia people can engage in in this community. If you want roughly equal PCs, use point buy. It's more balanced that way. If you want the world to have a bit more verisimilitude, rolls make for more organic players...

D&D 5E reducing dominance of ranged: cantrips

Cantrips are fine as they are. They do not compete in damage with, for example, a sharpshooter build. I kinda expected this thread to be addressing that disparity more than the relatively underpowered cantrips in the game. The only one that is a solid damage competitor is eldritch blast...

D&D 5E A simple questions for Power Gamers, Optimizers, and Min-Maxers.

Yeah, I think that's where I am. I do not think that one can balance the mechanics while keeping them distinct without making them dull at the same time. Further, I don't really know what it means to optimize something in a context where a character constructed at random will have the exact...

D&D 5E A simple questions for Power Gamers, Optimizers, and Min-Maxers.

I suppose my point was that I don't think such a system is possible. If every build is the same, there is no optimizing things. Also, sounds pretty boring. You'd have to remove anything too abnormal or distinct in the interest of balance. Polymorph? Nope, not balanced. Sharpshooter? Not...

D&D 5E A simple questions for Power Gamers, Optimizers, and Min-Maxers.

All things being balanced and equal just isn't fun. Further, you really can't optimize anything under those circumstances. I'm not saying I wanna do any cheesy builds or anything, but sometimes it's nice being able to play a well-built, competent character, and sometimes it's fun playing a zany...

D&D 5E Should short rest be an hour long?

If your players are using long rests constantly and short rests not at all, you aren't making random encounters in hazardous locations common enough or dangerous enough, in my opinion. It's not a problem with the rules. The assumption in the design seems to be that a short rest is pretty...

D&D 5E Classes Rated By Tier

Hrm, fair point! Alright, instead of punching it in the nose... use polymorph to turn into a giant ape and start throwing rocks. :D

D&D 5E Classes Rated By Tier

Well, technically true, but I don't think basing an argument on the notion that a DM can be a jerk and not allow you to use your abilities is a fair one. Even if it was, it cuts both ways. "Yeah, your God is in a mood today, your spell fizzled. Maybe you shouldn't have done that arguably evil...

D&D 5E Classes Rated By Tier

I disagree. It goes down, then up, then down, then back up. At 10 the druid can take the shape of an elemental, representing another peak in usefulness. Their 6 and 7 spells aren't as good, but then they peak again at 18 with the ability to cast as a mammoth or elemental, and are just ludicrous...

D&D 5E Classes Rated By Tier

That's just false. I've DMed for clerics, and while those spells are all very good, druids do it better. Conjure animals beats all of the above. If you don't think so, I suspect you've never seen it in play. Eight giant poisonous snakes can, in the first round, outperform a fireball. They also...

D&D 5E Classes Rated By Tier

Call lightning isn't great burst, but it is solid sustained damage over time at range. Same for sunbeam. They aren't perfect options, but they're something. If a dragon comes and opts to never land, the druid still has options. If nothing else, he can just turn into an air elemental, fly up and...

D&D 5E Classes Rated By Tier

One moment. Need to do some necromancy on this thread... It's not a matter of drawing and quartering the OP for his opinion of moon druids, it's simply that he's wrong by any objective measure. Druids are in the top tier, with wizards and bards. Even after level 2, they remain exceptionally...

D&D 5E Selecting the Simplest Sorcerer Solution

The difficulty would not be converting spell slots to points, that calculation is extremely simple. The complications that come in are balance concerns. A pure sorcerer is fairly underpowered in comparison to a wizard, but when multiclassed his primary weakness is ameliorated. Further, if a...

D&D 5E Selecting the Simplest Sorcerer Solution

For a pure sorcerer, have you considered using the spell point variant? Allow a 1:1 conversion between spell points and sorcery points and shut down multiclassing (would make things very complicated). I believe that would work out really well.
