What is a simple war game to simulate, well, a war in D&D

A few years ago, One Bad Egg put out a mass combat supplement called Hard Boiled Ideas: Armies. The idea being that each unique combat unit (whether your scale calls for platoon, company, or army level) to be a single "monster" with a stat block, represented by a single token or mini on a square...

    Question regarding Martial Adaptability feat

My interpretation is No. It specifically says to chose a class power (don't believe PP powers count as class powers, but that's not too important) and that the swapped power must be the same level as the original power. Your level 20 power would need to be swapped with a different level 20...

    The 5e toolkit

My ideal 5E would be 4E with the following exceptions/replacements: From 3E: Lower monster HP's Weapon types (crush, slash, pierce) Massive damage rule Coup-de-grace New: A sea/water skill to complement Nature/Dungeoneering/Streetwise Gridless combat options A morale system to maintain combat...

    The ONE Hit Point World

It becomes not unlike a modern FPS shooter video game, one of the more "realistic" ones like Ghost Recon or ARMA, where 1 hit kills. TSR's Top Secret game was often a case of who saw who first. With full auto weapons, and maybe 15 health each, gun combat was pretty deadly. Adventures like...

    Selling Animal Skins

Not to derail this interesting topic, but do your players really want to grind to get their limbs back? Wouldn't they rather you hand wave this, saying, "After a month of recovery, where you make your living off the wild lands, you save up enough gold for the magic spell. . ."?

Which Essentials class do you like the most?

Ditto. My human crossbow hunter at-will is Nimble Strike with Harrowing Swarm Student so it adds Rattling to any damage. Very helpful to my defender.

    Gencon 2011... aggghrrr information overload

Nice generalization there. Maybe some people like campaign settings because they have a limited amount of time and would rather dedicate that time to playing than world-building? Or maybe they just like those settings and they hold a lot of history for them? Nah, they are just unimaginative. . ...

    Adamantine Weapon

Well, by definition, doesn't untyped damage ignore a typed resistance anyway? A monster with resist cold 10 who is hit for 10 points of untyped damage would take 10 points, right?

    Adamantine Weapon

There are a few. Usually its the result of a power they have. I searched for "resist all" and a few popped up. Then I searched for "resist n to all" and many more popped up with resist 5, 10, 15, etc.

D&D 4E Which 4e setting do you prefer?

On the list, PoL for me, followed by DS. Eberron isn't my cup of tea and FR, while nice, has never appealed to me either. I think the bigger issue with DL is that 99% of the gaming population identify DL with the War of the Lance. And the issue with that is it's an event that greatly...

How far back does DDI go?

#364 (June, 2008) is the oldest currently available. They do have select articles from issues 360 to 363 available, but not the compiled issue. Paizo still has back issues going back many years. Some of the PDFs go back as far as 2000.

    Reach and attacking in 3D.

I was just reading through the Tarrasque's Earthbinding aura (target's maximum altitude reduced to 20 feet (putting it within the tarrasque’s reach)) and wondered at the weirdness of the assumption that a creature would have to be brought to an altitude of 20' in order to be attacked by a...

    "Domination" Domination

I have seen this almost exclusively, both at my regular table and LFR. Unless your party is melee heavy (which ours is definitely not!) it can turn out to be a pretty ineffective power. The last thing my party wants is for the bad guy to be within shift or easy movement range of the squishies...

What Is The Ideal Set Of Dice For 3e/Pathfinder/4e?

For 4E, class & level determine number of dice needed. Classes with high [W] or fixed die attacks as well as high level magic items that deal extra dice upon a critical hit will want to have more of those dice on hand. Personally, I keep on hand the maximum I'd be expected to roll in a normal...

    Run to bull rush required?

The dragon only needs to move adjacent to the target. The Bull Rush is a separate action, which includes the free shift. Assuming a hit, as long as the dragon isn't prevented from shifting by any other condition (slowed doesn't prevent shifting), he can shift into the vacated square. The...

    Ranged melee without provoking?

Take the Harrowing Swarm Student feat (Martial Power 2), then take the Harrowing Swarm Scout feat. You can retrain them both later once your Hunter automatically gets the feature that allows ranged attacks without granting OA's.

have you ever played without maps?

I voted yes, but the more I think about it, the answer is no. No matter how informal the games I've played (including a 4 person game in the back of the school bus on the way to summer camp), each included a map of some sort or another. Even if it was a few dots on a piece of paper to represent...

    Too Complicated A Buy-In?

Errata aren't behind the pay wall, so updates to 4E are free too; no DDI required. However, DDI is useful for the online compendium alone. Now that we're coming on 3 years playing 4E, I don't reference it as much as I used to, but its still a great resource.
