World Speaker Shamans (and to a lesser extent, Bear Shamans) make passable defenders. The world speaker's op attack that causes the move action to end is pretty cool IMO. Only downside is that the spirit's AC is usually pretty low.

I'll second the Elder White Dragon But my favorite is the Elder Green Dragon. Such a great battle-posed mini.

Another fun option for aiding a ranged ranger (or seeker/hunter) is to build a Watcher Spirit Shaman. Grants basic attacks like a warlord and the eagle spirit companion has a neat "defendery" schtick of granting a RBA when an adjacent enemy moves away.

I personally LOVE the idea of putting a bit of fear into the players with your example of the dragon's belly glowing red hot. Only reason I can see to not allow this is that a creature might be granted an action outside its turn. I can't think of an example off hand, but there might be a case...
