CRs/ELs -- apparently the designers don't read the rules they talk about (old thread)

Dude, it's marketing. What do you expect them to say? "Well, really, last year's product was just as good as the one we're producing this year, but buy our new stuff anyways, 'cause I've got a kid in college, an 11-year-old with braces and an $800-a-month payment on my Navigator?" I mean...

Must you have and use every book for D&D

None of the above. Over the years I've bought hundreds of books I'll probably never use, but I picked them up for a variety of reasons. Curiosity, an interesting concept, recommendations from others, a cool-looking cover, or a sticker marked "70% off". So I end up with a pointlessly large...

    Dragon Dungeon Little Nitpick. :)

Oh, aside from the corporate firewalls that block .pdfs? Or the difficulty in getting a browser to properly display the .pdf if you happen to have both Acrobat installed, instead of Acrobat Reader? Or the download managers that sometimes choke over .pdfs? I'd rather have them zipped, myself.

So, the DM Wants His Girlfriend to Play....

Can I offer a somewhat tongue-in-cheek piece of advice that nonetheless works great for me? Before we sit down and play, I run off a few rounds of 1-on-1 Deathmatch UT2k4 with my wife. That puts us in the proper no-favorites mood, and the rest of the game sails nice and smooth.

Anyone else hope the rules for taking 10 & 20 see some revision?

Guess this qualifies me as a RBDM, but in my campaigns, not only can you not take 20 for anything, but if you fail your roll, you can't try again until your skill improves. I'm OK with taking 10, though. But if you take 10 and it still isn't enough, you can't try again until your have a higher...

    101 Magic Items nobody needs.

Libram of Ineffable Tarnation-- causes the reader to henceforth speak like Yosemite Sam. Veil of Obscurity-- the wearer gets a +30 bonus on Knowledge (Useless information) checks. Sort of like Cliff Clavin. Hat of Change-- Magically exchanges any coin put inside it for an equal value of the...

Ry's guide to being an Evil Overlord

    83. If I'm eating dinner with the hero, put poison in his goblet, then have to leave the table for any reason, I will order new drinks for both of us instead of trying to decide whether or not to switch with him. Oh, the heck with it. My guards will burst in after the appetizer and gun him down...

    Would this be evil?

As long as he didn't take undue pleasure in the actual humiliation, I wouldn't even worry about the paladin participating. That's a great example of a punishment fitting a crime without over-reacting.

Help Me Remember RPG Combat System

Mayfair Games also had a combat expansion system for 1e/2e D&D that used an insane number of different combat moves, distributed among several different difficulty and training levels as well as monster-specific ones. Blood and Steel.

Need ideas for an interesting Necromacncer type

You know the one type of Necromancer I've never seen played, but would love to? A jolly one. He's friendly, charismatic, treats undead as old friends that he's happy to see again, treats them with respect. He views the control of death and undeath as a responsibility and it's his job to make...

Expedition To.... / Which Expedition do you want to see next?

I'd get this in a heartbeat. But it would need to have the original ship aesthetics, the Polyhedron updates were just plain fugly.

    Need a cool monster name

    Two Truths and a Lie

Oh, heck, I'll give it a try. 1. I once DM'd for a group that consisted of Speedy, Glaphre, Assur, and Balder... and those were the players' real names. 2. I have played D&D inside a WWII-era Japanese communications bunker on an island in the south pacific using a kerosene lamp as the only...

    Eberron Campaign Setting now pdf

Given a choice between a .pdf and a print version at the same price, I'd go for the .pdf every time. Why? Ctrl-F; Ctrl-+ and ctrl--; Ctrl-C, alt-tab, Ctrl-V; an entire library on a stick the size of my pinkie; drop-dead-easy map prints and enlargements; easy markup and notes without permanently...

    Monster reccomendations?

The corridors will be one foot high? OK, now that's insane. I wouldn't go into that for love or money. You can't even crawl in that, you have to inch along on your belly, and even a normal-sized human would be scraping the top and bottom as he did. Even a halfling would be crawling! And air...

    South Pacific Islands-flavored Campaign

The friendliness I referenced comes from everything I've heard from my wife, who is Micronesian, form one of the outer islands of Yap. From Yap in the west to Kosrae in the east, journeys for no other purpose than to just socialize and trade trinkets were common; an arriving group from just...
