If you consider the broader video game audience, Minsc is far more known than Elminster, even if the old wizard is prominent in the P&P RPG products. Minsc has a lot of broad exposure that Elminster doesn't have. Only Drizzt is more well-known, but Minsc would beat out any of the secondary...

Agree 1000%. The old characters were extremely iconic because they had to be. That included appearance, dialogue, and concept. They were silhouettes. By contrast, the wizard and cleric companions in BG3 are generic. If you drew pictures of them, no one would even know it was them because they...

These scenarios are all likely. However, I don't think it's a given. The directors/producer may be able to push back if their vision is strong enough, and the paymasters agree. The point is, the creators will have to fight to avoid the scenarios mentioned above.

Movies are basically a gambling game. Hence studios check off as many boxes as they can to mitigate the risk. License a known property that has a fanbase: check. Use known/popular characters: check. Pick known actor that has fans: check. And on and on and on. That's why lots of movies are...

If studios only cared about characters that were known throughout the culture, they would license the film rights to almost nothing. They want some kind of fanbase, preferably a very loyal fanbase that will get excited and spread the word. In the example of Minsc, he has lots of fans from the...

Yes they did, because they were guaranteed the rights to the characters if the movie flopped. And they were only distributing. It's a far different situation from this D&D movie. If it flops, everyone loses, so they are going to do everything they can to make it a winner (known characters, big...

Marvel picked Iron Man because the rights to most of their known characters were gone. They had to put up the rights to their remaining characters as collateral to even get the funding. To this day, the Hollywood trades write articles full of awe and wonder that Marvel was able to launch their...

You could argue that both Drizzt and Minsc/Boo are pretty famous. Both have had comic book lines, multiple video games, board games, and novels. And that doesn't include any actual RPG products they have appeared or featured in. If those characters aren't included in the film, they will most...

While I agree, studio executives will always want established/known characters among the fanbase. It helps them check boxes, and it sounds good to investors. Unless the producer/directors are able to push back, there will be at least one "known" character in the film. Specifically one they can...

Now that's interesting. Can you elaborate? I wonder if there have been other products that were designed this way. Surely the same would happen again for the new movie once the filming is underway.

I'd love to see Minsc and Boo in the film. What characters would everyone else want to see?

When the last big Transformers movie (before Bumblebee) was a dud money wise, this went away. Before that, they were seen as the bullet-proof, billion dollar franchise. They've been deciding on a new way forward for years. Between D&D, G.I. Joe, Magic The Gathering, and Transformers, they are...

Doubt they'll go meta. If that was the angle they wanted, the novels would be written this way.

Indiana Jones is a great example of humor, adventure, and dungeon delving mystery. Seems to fit the tone they want really well for a D&D movie.

Highly doubt they'll go the meta 'players playing a game' route. There are several reasons for this, but one obvious one is because Jumanji has that niche covered already. Imagine if the MCU was about kids reading comics, and those comics came to life. That would be a very different film...

Speaking of which, you know the producers watched that BG3 trailer and they were like... *looks at script... *looks at trailer... *looks at script... "Okay, we need to write something cooler!"

Totally agree. Fortunately, there are lots of other "common" monsters to pull from if you need fodder. Just pick something that matches the style of the villain or the theme of the movie. It's better anyway if the monsters are a metaphor for something instead of just random creatures to fight.

Or not have any of the heroes be magic users, such as the companions from Drizzt. Viewers would learn the rules of magic by inference from afar, since villains or whatever would use it. By the second film, if one of our main heroes is a wizard, no one would question it.

Back when they were fighting over the rights a few years ago, it was mentioned that Warners wanted a 200-250 million budget version. The intention is to go big, and they've got a big producer. I don't think attracting talent will be a problem as long as they have a good script.
