D&D (2024) What type of ranger would your prefer for 2024?

Hmm. Something like that could work I guess? Maybe a bit less generous? Is that feasible? I definitely don't think reducing the other class features in the name of spellcasting is a good idea. As much as I think Rangers should have it, I don't want to see their class features subservient to it.

D&D (2024) What type of ranger would your prefer for 2024?

Trying to think if some kind of middle ground is theoretically possible. That lets 1st and 2nd be more general use, while gaining access to 3rd and up at the appropriate levels but just on a shorter leash early on. Rangers getting Ritual casting as standard may help some? I mean I think they...

D&D (2024) What type of ranger would your prefer for 2024?

Don't get me wrong, I understand the logic. I just dislike it. Feels like you end up with a similar problem, where the early spells ought to be your bread and butter, but you've got to be unreasonably precious with your spell slots.

D&D (2024) What type of ranger would your prefer for 2024?

That's an interesting proposal! Though, I dislike the rate at which the spell slots are staggered. Seems silly to not get Four 1st level slots till 17th level when it barely matters. Even not getting Three 2nd and 3rd level slots till levels 13 and 14 is a little rough.

D&D (2024) What type of ranger would your prefer for 2024?

Like even if those are too crunchy (hah, y'know, like Snow?) for their tastes, it wouldn't take a ridiculous amount of work to condense a few of those down to more applicable spells. Like rolling Ice Skate and Snow Walk into one, lets you navigate difficult or treacherous terrain with greater...

D&D (2024) What type of ranger would your prefer for 2024?

Yeeaah. Even with supplements like Icewind Dale, you'd think surely that could prompt something new for the nature classes. It being set in an extreme natural environment is the whole point. But nah only two new spells and they're both for Wizard.

D&D (2024) What type of ranger would your prefer for 2024?

I think that's true, but I like the spellcasting as well! I like spells for the primal classes as an expression of "this is how magic through a connection to nature manifests in the awakened beings". Just, yeah. Not without it's complications or growing pains.

D&D (2024) What type of ranger would your prefer for 2024?

Fair, though I feel like the lack of validation hurts Ranger more than those two. Everyone knows that Bards and Wizards can be cool, regardless of the chosen flavour for their spellcasting. And if nothing else, the mechanical strength helps! Whereas yeah, bit more of an uphill struggle for...

D&D (2024) What type of ranger would your prefer for 2024?

Sure, I think that makes a degree of sense. Rangers being the Generalist to the Druid's Specialist, contrary to what you might assume. It's frustrating how decidedly uncool these descriptions are, regardless of accuracy. "The generic ones", "lack of dedication", these are not flattering.

D&D (2024) What type of ranger would your prefer for 2024?

I agree that Batman is close to the class fantasy for a Ranger in my mind, despite incongruencies of theme n' all that. "technically artificer is a better fit but also monk because punching" etc. Yeah, that is how I see Rangers generally. Ideally. Creatures of intuition, superior reaction...

D&D (2024) What type of ranger would your prefer for 2024?

I do like this school of thought as an aspect of their flavour, but I will say it feels like only part of the answer. What allows a Ranger to learn and apply these lessons in a way that the other classes never will? I think the default 5E Ranger spell list is/was frustratingly limited for...

D&D (2024) What type of ranger would your prefer for 2024?

I'm personally firmly on the side of spellcasting for Ranger, but something I've been trying to pin down for a while now is, what's a good answer for where the Ranger's magic comes from exactly. In particular, what satisfactorily distinguishes them from Druids (and to a lesser extent Barbarians...

D&D (2024) What type of ranger would your prefer for 2024?

Definitely agree, I liked Roving from Deft Explorer for just that reason. Except in TCE they made it so you had to take it at 6th level, which is pretty late I think. As opposed to in the original UA, where you could take it at 1st if you wanted. In the Ranger revision I've been tinkering with...
