Ability Checks - Should they be errata'd?

4e cut out 'take 20' except for the situation when characters are searching a room in non-combat situations. Are you finding that you still need to allow 'take 20' for handling things like opening doors? I would play this saying that if their passive take 10 value is not good enough, they get a...

    Anemic Horses

Doh! I used 100 feet per second, not per minute. Move along! Move along! Nothing to see here! So 5.6 mph with a top speed of 11.2 mph is about right. See my next post - a speed of 2 when carrying 330 lbs is about right.

    Anemic Horses

Please blast my math if something is wrong here, but 1 'Horsepower' - the power output of one draft horse - is 33,000 lbs * feet / minute. This would mean that a horse can pull 330 lbs 100 feet / minute, or... 330 lbs * 10 feet / 6 seconds.... 10 ft per 6 seconds.

    Anemic Horses

I don't see how a horse carrying 300 lbs. being limited to 68 mph tactical speed is somehow unrealistic. A check of wikipedia shows that the fastest recorded sprint speed of a horse over a short distance is 55 mph. And you can bet it wasn't carrying 300 lbs. of gear. If anything, all existing...

    Long Jump questions

They do allow a 'double-move' to cover such situations. Convert your standard action to a move action and they you don't have to determine if you fall until the end of your second move action. So with some planning of your turn, you can make a move with a larger jump.

    Replacing dead party members

I agree. Also note that the only way a character can 'catch-up' is by other people missing sessions or going on side adventures. There is no XP award scaling by character level as there was in 3e. I'm onboard with coming in at a lower level being 'not fun' and think that play style is best left...

D&D 4E Heavy Concrete Data on 4e's Skill Challenge System (long, lots of tables)

Right. The skill challenge system seems out of place with the rest of the DMG. Reading the monster building and encounter building sections, you can see how the design focused first one 'desired outcome', then created math to support the desired outcome, then build a design that would make the...

D&D 4E The First 4E Change that I simply cannot support....

Except the U.K.'s colours are .... red, white and blue. So it is obviously a British patriotic monster.

D&D 4E What was Paizo thinking? 3.75 the 4E clone?

I'm three. I've decided that I'm going to move forward to 4e and just cancelled my Pathfinder subscription. While I could have used fan conversions, I'd rather get product for the edition I'm using. Hopefully Necromancer Games' Adventure Paths will be up to the same quality.

What the *scratches head* Tiefling, Eladrin...

Reminds me of when I first played D&D when I was 8 and we pronounced 'Miscellaneous' as Mis-lan-che-ous. I still like it better :D ... while I like things about other languages (French's cool verb tenses and Spanish's phonetic spelling) I must say that I love English's "do whatever you think...

Armor & Coins - please, No.

That was one thing I really missed in 3e. In BD&D, 1st (and I guess 2nd), once certain classes reached the class' 'named' level (around 10th) they started to attract followers - whether they liked it or not. So inevitably they started becoming a power center of their own and became involved in...

Reason 'squares' is better than 'feet': the metric system

/* sarcasm */ I say instead of calling it 'squares' we call them something more neutral - how about using double quotation marks symbol - ". This symbol would mean 'appropriate game units'. For example if I felt the game unit for indoor movement was 10 feet, I could say that a character's...

Reason 'squares' is better than 'feet': the metric system

    1/3 meter = 0.33... = 33 centimeters = 333 milimeters 1/3 foot = 12 inches / 3 = 4 inches With imperial I have to remember the specific conversion that 1 foot = 12 inches. Metric I don't. That being said I do like base 12...

    Conversion: Keep on the Borderlands

I think your conversion is off - a square is roughly equal to a five foot diameter circle. You just need to trim the old 5 foot grids into circles and put Ethereal Gates around each circle circumference so that characters can move diagonally from circle to circle using a point of 'square'...

    GSL: Necromancer Games SOL?

More wild speculation Based on rumor, innuendo and vast amounts of lurking, I too feel expert enough to opine on this subject... Releasing items under the OGL does not remove your copyright on the material - it only restricts your ability to prevent others from using it without your...
