Pandemic: How will you continue to enjoy your hobbies?

You can't calculate the death rate as 'current cases/deaths'. It takes 2 weeks for people to die after they start showing acute symptoms. There are currently 111 deaths; 2 weeks ago there were 994 cases. So that's a death rate of 11%. There are currently 6500 cases, in 2 weeks time we'll know...

Pandemic: How will you continue to enjoy your hobbies?

I don't think you're reading the math right. If coronavirus infects as many people as the flu, ie. 31M, and the fatality rate is 3.4%, then that's 1M people. What might be off is the 0.5% flu rate I used, as that's 155K dead. So the flu rate is lower. H1N1 was not as infectious as expected. So...

    D&D 1E Edition Experience: Did/Do you Play 1E AD&D? How Was/Is It?

I'd play it too. Things others see as a problem, I enjoy. All those limits provide opportunities for me to stretch myself in my roleplaying. Being able to be whatever I want in modern D&D is boring to me. Let the fates play a role in who I might be.

    D&D and the rising pandemic

The Canadian government has been all over this right from the start. One province alone has done more testing that then entire US. So the reported Canadian numbers are probably more accurate, but the virus still got into community transmission. We had a lot of cases coming in from Iran (large...

    D&D 1E Edition Experience: Did/Do you Play 1E AD&D? How Was/Is It?

Of course, I was only joking..... It was the bard players who cheated. ;)

    D&D and the rising pandemic

Yep. Like everyone who said Y2K was overblown. They have no idea how much was work was done.

    D&D 1E Edition Experience: Did/Do you Play 1E AD&D? How Was/Is It?

But then you'd have no way of spotting the players that cheat. They're the ones who showed up with a Paladin.

    D&D 1E Edition Experience: Did/Do you Play 1E AD&D? How Was/Is It?

Played it during a brief window of 3 years or so. Loved it but never found a group to play with after other kids' interest waned. For me the richness of the game was what made it so incredible. The random encounter odds in the DMG especially made clear that the distribution odds are important...

    D&D and the rising pandemic

Just watched an epidemiologist say that over the long term the whole population will get exposed. Then it will become another childhood disease like measles or chickenpox. Just need to slow it down enough to prevent a health system collapse to minimize the scale of deaths. Treatments are coming...

Pandemic: How will you continue to enjoy your hobbies?

I will come back and quote you when the death rate starts skyrocketing in 2 weeks. It takes about 14 days for those in acute care to die. Coronavirus is currently estimated at 3.4% fatality rate, which is 6.8x that of the seasonal flu. 6% of cases become acute. Based on CDC data (Preliminary...

OD&D Edition Experience: Did/Do You Play Basic D&D? How Was/Is it?

Well, what I find, and I think is born out by conversations here and on dndbeyond, is that players focus on the crunch of their character sheet and what they unlock on their next level up. They don't seek out non-mechanical in-world improvements as the game rules reward a different style of...

    TSR Xp and "Treasure"

B1 and B2 did have some supplemental rules that didn't quite fit into the Holmes edition page count. I'd say give them the XP. If they get up a few levels, then they'll not be interested in such pittance. Not so much in B2, but B1 has tons of furniture-as-treasure. Just watch your players...

    D&D 5E Losing Interest in Character/ Class?

This is exactly why my favourite version of D&D is B/X or similar ones. Without all the mass of PC mechanical crunch, the players and DM focus more on what's happening in the game, not what they unlock in their next level up. This comes from my experiences running long running B/X campaigns vs...

We call that 'heart attack on a bun'. We have ours without the bun.

D&D General ‪What does the word “dire”‬ mean to you?

We lurk unseen... The only way you can spot Canadians online is our American vocabulary with British spelling. And only we know what a 'double-double' is. And May 2-4.

Recent Canadian English example of dire: 'Dire' shortage has Vancouver doctors turning away patients seeking COVID-19 testing Pretty sure they didn't mean 'shabby'.

D&D 4E Presentation vs design... vs philosophy

Deities and Demigods may have beefed up their stats to discourage players going and killing heroes and gods, a problem that cropped up after Gods, Demi-Gods & Heroes was published.

OD&D Edition Experience: Did/Do You Play Basic D&D? How Was/Is it?

This is why I like OSR versions of D&D so much better. I don't think adding 'more' crunch actually does the game any favors. I play 5e only because I must. I know a lot of people complain about the deadliness - but for me the game is just so much faster to play and the focus is where it should...
