Or use Target 20 System and have all the benefits of ascending AC with no conversion.

OD&D Edition Experience: Did/Do You Play OD&D? How Was/Is It?

Getting rid of skills would do a lot. I've always preferred to assign a d6 probability if I need to introduce some randomness; or a reaction check 2d12 is more reliable than a d20.

OD&D Edition Experience: Did/Do You Play OD&D? How Was/Is It?

The OSR community begs to differ. :). Honestly, it's a lot like 5e - 1st level you're fragile, 2nd you can take a hit and run away to fight again, 3rd you can start holding your own. If you ever have a chance to try a one shot game, I'd recommend it. The thing I love about OSR games is that the...

OD&D Edition Experience: Did/Do You Play OD&D? How Was/Is It?

You can... sort of. And a lot of OSR folks like myself are playing 5e. But I still find it way too crunchy and finicky to run compared to what I like; I do it only because that's what people want to play.

OD&D Edition Experience: Did/Do You Play OD&D? How Was/Is It?

Massively better is Target20. Player totals d20 + attack bonus, DM mentally adds monster's AC and if it's 20 or higher, it's a hit. Depending on class, attack bonus rises by level, 2/3 level or 1/2 level. I use it in my OSR games, and it's just as good as ascending AC and even a tiny bit faster...

They don't hang out here much. The types of arguments had here are about things that are anathema to OD&D play style. They hang out on odd74.proboards.com

D&D 5E Does anyone else feel like the action economy and the way actions work in general in 5e both just suck?

I'm not going to wade through 14 pages of comments, but still want to reply to OP. :) I have no issue with the action economy. Action + move + possible bonus action is great and works really well. Way simpler than 3e and much like some of the good parts of 4e. There is nothing that states...

OD&D Edition Experience: Did/Do You Play OD&D? How Was/Is It?

I have a personally laid out book of a re-edit of the OD&D books by someone in the community. It is actually very easy and simple ruleset, not much different than B/X. I also have the OD&D originals I bought a number of years ago. After abandoning 4e a few years into its run, I went to OSR...

OSR Played It Review of Old-School Essentials Using D&D ‘s The Lost City

This freeing from the tyranny of the character sheet is why I love B/X rules so much. With so much less emphasis on character abilities, I find my players focus so much more on the world and interacting with it. Instead of trying to figure out which of their skill or abilities will help them...

    D&D 5E Is 5e the Least-Challenging Edition of D&D?

This was never true at my table in the 5 years I've run an OSR campaign. My players always found ingenious ways to avoid fights they didn't want to have, or ensure that they were on unfair terms for their opponent. Or they would beat a hasty retreat and plot their revenge. I can't recall having...

D&D 4E Presentation vs design... vs philosophy

If a major portion of your customer base abandon the product, then I don't agree it's the customer's fault. We had no issues with "doing it wrong" with 3.5e, B/X or 5e. This is also where the criticism of 4e 'not being D&D' comes from - you could not approach it the same way as other versions...

D&D 4E Presentation vs design... vs philosophy

Speaking from my own personal experience with 4e, I found every class had a 'sameness' because their mechanics were all identical - do 'at-will' with damage plus small class specific effect; do 'encounter' with more damage plus bigger class specific effect; do 'daily' with lots of damage plus...

    Internally logical magic systems?

D&D has always been kitchen sink gaming. You can fit a lot of different settings and styles into the D&D framework. The downside is if you want a more coherent setting, then you'll have to put in work to make it so, and convince your players to accept it. As for magic rules. I go with the...

D&D 4E Presentation vs design... vs philosophy

B/X was the pinnacle of D&D design. Everything since then has tried to tack more chrome on what was a simple and elegant system that encouraged in-game rewards instead of mechanical meaningless choices. ;) Joking aside, having played B/X, AD&D, 3.5e, 4e and 5e, 4e was the only edition I quit...

S&W is my favourite, but I've played the most with LL.

D&D 4E Presentation vs design... vs philosophy

For me 5e feels like they took all the 'non-mechanics' rules simplifications that 4e brought, and tacked on a simpler 3e d20 system. I really liked 4e's rules for running the game, outside of power system, and the DMG was excellent. But 4e failed for many, many reasons. Problem with the rules...

OSR Played It Review of Old-School Essentials Using D&D ‘s The Lost City

I highly recommend Swords & Wizardry, the core rules is the leanest and fastest playing version of D&D I've tired. I find Labyrinth Lord (B/X) really clunky in comparison.

D&D 4E Presentation vs design... vs philosophy

There were lots of other problems with 4e at the table for me, but this was the one that made it not feel right. I always described it like they built a great game framework, but didn't put enough onto it to hide the framework.
