Game rules are not the physics of the game world

This reminds me of a 50th anniversary of superman special, which included "interviews" with supervillains as well as common thugs. And there was this one guy going "The money we wasted in bullets! It was like we were convinced that if we could hit that S at just the right angle, that bullet...

Game rules are not the physics of the game world

um, yeah. As soon, you mean, as you say that an npc says that's what happened, you mean? As opposed to "hrm, that seems impossible to happen. Perhaps this isn't really the king who died, or the king really wasn't the hero he claimed to be, or there was another cause of death, or something else...

    Class Granularity

Unlike those who like a middle ground, I would be ok with either extreme but not the middle ground. ;) Either give me enough classes to find the one that really looks like what I want, or give me a close to point buy system so I can build it myself. The 3x strategy of a moderate number of...

A worry about "special case monster abilities"

Worked in the Dead Zone. Admittedly it was a Baby Shield, so the grapple check was a lot easier.

Game rules are not the physics of the game world

If everyone could abide by this simple distinction, the thread would be somewhat shorter. ;)

Game rules are not the physics of the game world

I found this point interesting so I started a poll on the general forum (not sure why this thread is here instead of there to begin with, to be honest) phrasing the question specifically in terms of player enjoyment.

Do you like "off screen" events to be rules-plausible?

There was an extended discussion over on the 4e forum, about whether DMs should feel constrained by the rules of the game when establishing off screen background information. One of the examples given (and used ad nauseum) was of a warrior king who had heroicly slain a dragon at one point in his...

A worry about "special case monster abilities"

Wrong. With or without the racial requirement, "why is this a feat?" and "why would I need to be level 12 with a specific build before even trying this?" were common complaints i had in 3x, practically with every expansion book. Telling people how they think is both rude, and rarely accurate.

What was so bad about DMing 3x?

I love different systems. And I agree that some systems are better for some players and GMs. The point of this thread was to find out what was folks didn't like about DMing 3x and if the dislike of it was universal, not to start a "if you don't like this you're doing it wrong thread." :\ In...

yeah, its dictionary has some odd blind spots I've noticed....

Caucusing - State caucus report, but no trip to national

Elections should ALWAYS be decided by who brings the best snacks. :D

Caucusing - State caucus report, but no trip to national

In the caucus my mom did, you apparently go into different rooms assigned to different candidates. If an initial tally found that your room had less than 15% of the caucusers, that room was closed and you could either pick another candidate or leave. It was like a physical version of run-off...

Game rules are not the physics of the game world

I think we're playing it fast and loose with the use of possibility here. Stipulating a single or opposed die roll and "stipulating" a nigh impossible series of rolls along with the fighter not noticing he was cursed and simply running away are not in the same range for me. It's a lot closer to...

Caucusing - State caucus report, but no trip to national

My mom did a caucus yesterday and was not thrilled with the process either. One of her complaints was that she felt it went against the "secret ballot" idea which she considers important in American democracy. In other news, "caucus" is totally one of those words that sounds like it should be...

Game rules are not the physics of the game world

That's what I was trying to answer. If you go so far as determining the success or failure of a rules possible event, but not posit rules impossible events, you have a reasonable level of predictability / consistency in the setting. If you posit a rules impossible event, those elements are...

    Nonhuman noncombatants?

Thank you, those are the details I wasn't able to come up with. Now, of course you can say that 45% of orcs are CE and all the others are NE and LE, but then why not just list them as "Always Evil (any)"? My assumption as a DM would be something along the lines of CE 40% /\ NE 15% CN 15% /\...

Game rules are not the physics of the game world

While I'm not KM, my answer to the same question would be that adherence to the action-resolution system in off screen matters enhances predictability and consistency, which are two things I enjoy as a player and a DM. In a post above, I listed some of the possible endings of the "mystery"...

A worry about "special case monster abilities"

that should, imo be the entire point of action points (plus occasional rerolls) - doing something you can't do without them. The Eberron action points were so lame, it was strange to me as a player that the system bothered to have them. Good action point uses : * rerolling a failed roll at a...

What was so bad about DMing 3x?

I agree that this is sucky. One of the many reasons I love the hypertext srd, but it's not always an option to do all prep at my computer.
