D&D 5E Notes from the underground: a few opening thoughts about D&D Next or 5e.

I'm afraid I'll have to disagree with you on the matter of sleep. As you say it was the go-to spell for magic users. One of the things WotC is trying to eliminate is that the idea that some abilities are "Go-to". We as players have been asking for more freedom of choice for years. By levelling...

    The playtest has begun

I was able to get through on the Customer service page with a search of "D&D Next". I now have a number of PDFs and a letter from Mike Mearls.

Paladin Design Goals ... WotC Blog

Personally, I'm curious as to how they'll manage the Detect Evil aspect of the Paladin. It's always been something I've been rather uncertain about, both as a player who has played many paladins and as a GM. Primarily because so often it gets used as an "evildar": See evil, smite evil, see...

Magic is not the red-headed stepchild.

See no evil, hear no evil, be unaffected by Blasphemy. I can see where the idea is coming from, but I don't agree with it - to a certain degree. Yes, a blind monk will be unaffected by an illusion that requires sight, and a deaf guard won't be distracted by a Ghost sound, but these are things...

    Playable Large Characters

This is pretty much it. I recall playing a Dragonkin (custom savage progression) that had me as being large at 1st level. Wielding a polearm with combat reflexes and the shorten grip feat from Dragon I could AoO any square within 20ft from 1st level multiple times.

    D&D 5E D&D Next weekly art column!

Female practically-armoured warrior being handed a chainmail bikini - "That looks like it chafes" Alternately, sending up the impracticalities of such clothing with another image later in the book.

Time to bring back the prose?

In some areas, such as flavourful descriptions of objects, monsters and certain abilities: yes. In the vast majority of areas, no, though as has already been said being overly clinical should be avoided as well. It can result in a somewhat sterile tone which is one of the more voiced complaints...

    D&D 5E D&D Next weekly art column!

Looks like a return to a familiar topic for us this week: What is the symbol of D&D? Dungeons & Dragons Roleplaying Game Official Home Page - Article (Secret Handshake)

Cleric design goals . Legends and Lore April 23

IIRC, the Cleric was originally created as a holy warrior to be able to kill a particularly annoying vampire. Everything else came later.

Cleric design goals . Legends and Lore April 23

EXCALAMATORY STATEMENT RESULTING FROM MISINTERPRETATION OF THE ARTICLE COMBINED WITH MY OWN SPECULATION!!! With that over with, it's a nice look at what's going on inside the design process. The fact that it's possible to build a sneaky cleric scout within the system speaks many favorable...

    D&D 5E D&D Next weekly art column!

As has been said, the Spellbook is the one object that every wizard should have. It's a big part of their character. However, for depictions of wizards, I'd also favour a staff. LIke the pointy hat it's fairly typical of most classical wizards, and unlike the hat it still remains in use for...

Why did you stay with an earlier edition?

The reason I stayed with/moved back to 3.5/Pathfinder can be summed up with an action I took in a game today. The party was being hit hard by a ghost. In desperation I decided to use my racial ability to cast Daylight on it, reasoning that if it was only able to appear at night this might work...

    D&D 5E D&D Next weekly art column!

I think I'd most likely favour a point somewhere in the middle where the two are balanced. Overly stylised can be severely off-putting (and is one of the main complaints my friends make about video games like WoW and Team Fortress 2). On the other hand D&D is a fantasy game, and I want art to...

    D&D 5E D&D Next Design Goals (Article)

Personally I've yet to see any of this 4e hate from the designers. I suspect the vast majority of it is over exaggeration by fans of that particular iteration of comments the designers have made concerning flaws of 4e. I'm encouraged by this design document. While there's nothing really new...

Who else wants damage tracked separately per hit ?

As others have said, not for D&D. While I don't mind this sort of system, I suspect it would get in the way when I'm playing. I'll leave it for Riddle of Steel and the other semi-realistic combat systems. D&D I just want to be able to sit down and roll some dice with my friends.

Is this evidence that the public playtest is going to happen soon?

I think you're being overly optimistic with this. They need time to compile and implement the data that they've gathered from the playtest at PAX. A week won't be nearly enough for that.

    Poll: Starting Point for Campaigns

I used to prefer starting at low-mid level. (Then I took 1d8 damage to the knee) Of late I've found myself increasingly preferring the playstyle that accompanies starting at 1st level. It feels more like I'm developing the character in to a hero, rather than simply starting with one. It feels...

Blog: Sneak Attack Vs. Backstab 3/28/12

I'm inclined to wait until I see how the numbers work out myself. 10d6 is a lot of dice, and since we don't know what monster HP is going to be like yet, we don't know what proportion of the HP those 10 dice are going to shave off. Giving up the CA for the Sneak attack is an interesting idea...

Dragon’s-Eye View 3/28/2012... now with ENW poll!

Though I voted photorealism in the poll, I generally find myself somewhere between photo and fantastic realism. In short, I like my armour sensible, but with a touch of something to lend that fantastic element to it. However, as with Twin Bahamut, I wasn't overly fond of 4e's armour design...

Paladins: Lawful Good only and other restrictions

I'm with you on Race and Gender, but why no restriction on alignment? Especially on a class which has traditionally been defined by (or defined) a particular alignment?
