TSR The Beginning: 1968 and Meeting Gary Gygax and the Gygax Family

Nice! And I would have pronounced "Korps" as "corpse" as well, but seemingly Gary and Bill were right:

D&D 5E Paladin oath. What constitutes willingly breaking your oath/code?

Wow. Call me old school, but for me willingly breaking an oath is to willingly do something you said you would or wouldn't do in your oath. I know, mind blown.

D&D General The 10' hallway default. How? Why?

I'm not sure if this was mentioned in the thread, but there was a specific rule in AD&D for miniatures where each 10' square depicted in the maps would be split in a 3x3 grid for miniatures, each 1" square being equal to 3 1/3 ft. Sounds confusing, but it worked for us for years. AD&D 1E DMG, p.10

D&D General Which edition of D&D did you grow up with?

We got the actual dice, but they were of such poor quality that all the corners wore off within a few weeks. Our box did not survive, either.

What is missing in 5E that you had in other editions?

We had the same attitude, until we re-read the death saving throw rules more closely. You then realize any attack gives automatic death save failures. We lost a 9th-level paladin shockingly quickly because of AoEs and follow-up attacks. We feel a bit more vulnerable now.

The poll results are hidden. Wait, what?

Counter spell and calling out spell levels

You're the DM, you don't have to. Counterspell says: (emphasis mine) You don't have to tell them anything until they try, and they either succeed or fail.

James M Ward: Meeting Gary Gygax and Learning D&D

Welcome! Although I've been playing since 1977, I've never had the honor of meeting Gary. Of course, I was 10 at the time... But I did get the chance to exchange with him here before his passing, at least.

What is your way for doing Initiative?

This should be a poll :D We roll every round, makes things exciting. We use Roll20 to track initiative (we play in person, but with Roll20, a lot faster!).

Seeking Ideas for Character who Have Salvaged Animated Armor

Why only negative stuff? How about a Persuasion check to negotiate with it to function normally, or even give them some interesting bonuses. Like, for example, negate Advantage from being flanked, since the armor can move out of the way/warn the wearer, etc. Or it becomes very talkative, lots...

Upcoming products will "touch on cultures that don't usually get exposure."

I have a special place in my heart for the Empires adventure series from 2e, set in FR's Ra-Khati (FRA1 Storm Riders, FRA2 Black Courser, FRA3 Blood Charge). Our campaign in the early 90's was pretty epic. So hoping for more Mongolian/Tibetan/Indian themed content.

D&D 5E Mental prison; power creep, typo or working as intended

I will quote the relevant part: The rest of your post seems to imply that one has to be dumb not to choose Hexblade, the overpowered one, and I provided an example of the opposite. That's what it has to do with your post. ;)

D&D 5E Mental prison; power creep, typo or working as intended

Well, munchkins might think like that. I don't shy away from power gaming and optimization, but I usually start with a concept and roll with it. This time round, it's a telepath sorlock, and I'm sticking with it. :) It so happens there's also a pure warlock in the party, and he chose GOO as...

D&D 5E Clarification on Spell Slots/ Sorcerer Spells Per Day

I would love to see where that would be interpreted that way. :D As the others mention, the sorcerer chooses which spell to cast from his/her know spells, and a slot is consumed when cast whose level is at minimum the spell's level, or a higher level slot according to the spell description. The...
