    D&D Setting Sketch - Solano

The White Shell The White Shell is the closest ruin of the Winter Empire to Solano. From a distance, the sun-bleached dome of the structure, with a curving gash in its side, resembles the coil of a seashell, hence the name. The dome lies in an almost perfectly round depression, suggesting that...

    D&D Setting Sketch - Solano

The Tea House The Tea House is a perfectly respectable name for an establishment which, unfortunately, serves very little tea. It is Solano's only inn, featuring six double rooms surrounding an open-air courtyard on three sides (the fourth side being the front wall and entrance). The courtyard...

    D&D Setting Sketch - Solano

Surrounds Solano occupies a dry gulch in the highest foothills of what the locals call the Sunset Range. There is a lake above the town to the west which presumably fed the stream that once ran through the gulch, years if not decades before it was settled, but now an aqueduct constructed by...

    D&D Setting Sketch - Solano

Solano Less than three generations ago, the Spring Empire looked to have a prosperous future of expansion and discovery. In your grandmother's and grandfather's time, however, the promise of the empire turned sour. Bitter rivalry and open conflict in the Imperial House led to bloodshed and...

Aligning the players' and PCs' mental states (Forked from: Why the World Exists)

Glad we don't play together then. ;) I really find that kind of "immersion" gets in the way of what I enjoy about roleplaying games, and I really really don't want to play characters who are much like me. It's not about pretending I'm someone else, or getting away from my life in some kind of an...

    WotC 2009 Product Releases page

Ari, if you worked on The Plane Below, or know enough to say, can you confirm or deny that it covers the Abyss as well as the Elemental Chaos in general?

RPGs based off of Licensed Properties

Yeah, Cam, I've heard what you guys say. I think it's patently ridiculous to suggest that the system works for all the shows you've used it for, but it's your decision to make.

RPGs based off of Licensed Properties

Licensed games are generally best when a system is specifically designed for them. That's one of the issues I have with Serenity and Battlestar Galactica roleplaying games - I don't think they should even remotely use the same system, which is clearly just MWP's pet in-house system blindly...

Aligning the players' and PCs' mental states (Forked from: Why the World Exists)

I don't believe that aligning the PC's mental state and the player's mental state is a desireable or worthwhile goal. Edit: To expand, my focus in play is on presenting a memorable character with goals and desires and plans, which will then run up against the events of the setting, the desires...

    Why the world is?

These days, I tend to create settings in such a way that the question of how or why the whole world came to be is completely irrelevant. It's much more relevant to ask why the town the PCs live in was founded, why there are ruins on the plains past the mountains to the west, et cetera.

    4E Eberron: Kalashtar = Deva? I disagree.

I think it's obvious: deva and kalashtar are not the same. This isn't like saying halflings live in nomadic tribes and ride dinosaurs, but are still small, quick, et cetera. Kalashtar don't reincarnate, and even if you forget about the specific flavour - they don't get benefits based on their...

    Why the World Exists

I understand the appeal of this, but frankly I can't think of anything more boring than this sort of "competitive", challenge-the-players gameplay. I don't really like most competitive, "prove yourself" sorts of games - and, especially when it comes to roleplaying, what I want from the game is...

    Why the World Exists

I think this whole screed assumes some principles which aren't necessarily even remotely relevant.

How can I introduce Warforged into my Warhammer D&D Campaign?

Because of its ridiculously poor system? ;)

    4E Eberron: Kalashtar = Deva? I disagree.

That's a misleading description, though. Each kalashtar's soul is linked to a quori spirit, but the individual kalashtar aren't reincarnated in any recognisable sense. It's just that the quori spirit survives - children of the same sex as the kalashtar parent are connected to the same quori...

Are You Using the 4E Forgotten Realms as a Setting?

I thought it was clear from that post that they're using Forgotten Realms maps and locales for a Fourth Edition "core" game.

    WoTC March 2009 Editorial Calendar

The Codex of Betrayal series is a counterpart to the Demonomicon series, only covering high-ranking devils instead of powerful demons. The first one came out in an early Fourth Edition issue of Dragon and covered Beleth, Prince of Imps.

    4e Change of mind

I am pretty much in exactly the same boat, except that I never bothered with the ENWorld pre-release stuff, and I still have all of my Third Edition books (though I don't plan to run or play that game again). Still, D&D Fourth Edition isn't the only game in Mhacdebhandia Town. From where I sit...

digital insider: Monk in PH3, playtest in May

It can't be a martial class. Look at the box on page 54 of the Player's Handbook: Other Power Sources: Additional power sources and techniques provide characters of different classes with powers and abilities. These will appear in future Player’s Handbook volumes. For example, barbarians and...
