You see, I didn't really look at it as a penalty. I mean, the player isn't there but he is still earning half of the earned experience for that session. I can see your point, but I'm not sure I agree with it.

The large size comes from the maps, which are given in single page pdfs. The maps in the boxed set are huge, so this was the only way to facilitate that. If you are on dial up, I'd suggest getting the physical boxed set and not the pdf.

Man, to me that sounds like a very well run campaign. He challenges you, makes you fear for your character's lives, but you guys still manage to barely come out on top. That can very hard to do in D&D sometimes. Tell him to not be sad, tell him to be happy that is he running a great game.
