Moral Dilemma: Killing and Deaths in RPGs

The point I was making was psychological readiness of the player. It wasn't a character they made and it wasn't anything they were invested in. The exercise is to see if they handle the grown-up reality of character death. If not, they were not ready to sit at my grown-up table. And there...

An Elf By Any Other Name . . .

I've always wondered why Dwarves, being a mining race, would have axes? But then you realize that they were a Germanic myth and Germania was mostly forest. In 'reality' they would use picks amd hammers. So yeah, what you know.

D&D 5E Making Monster Weakness Interesting

Okay maybe it SHOULD... My issue with some traps is just the ludicrousness of them when compared to the simpler more effective means. Why spend millions of gp erecting a mile long slide with a blade at end when a scything blade will do the same thing? And the saving throw was created as a...

    Metal School

Back to work... The Cult is definitely born out of old metal. They were around long before they hit it big and opened for many AOR acts in the late 80s. Fire Woman was the hit that launched them to fame which was in the same vein as Gn'R. New but not quiet grunge. Stripped down but not naked...

D&D 5E Making Monster Weakness Interesting

But lets think about the cost that that would incur and then what the reward of that cost would be? Also, complicated mechanical traps require maintenance. Who is keeping it up? Logic trumps cool. Which is why a trap should be used sparingly and other situations/deterrents be used instead.

    Character vs. Campaign

I've actually used a couple creative ways to get around these problems. First of the session 0 is a must; whether via email, text, phone or table. I found out quickly as a DM to pitch the idea and then shut up and listen. Answering questions and interjecting only when needed. It helped on...

    What Shows Would You Make?

Like most Disney projects it'll be throw it at the wall if it sticks...great! If not, scrape it in the bin with the rest of them.

D&D 5E Making Monster Weakness Interesting

To be fair (and sri for the temporary de-rail) but dungeon design has had tropes that fall in line with movies and are just...wrong. I remember "The Giant Netbook of Traps (Crap)" Giant mile long slides, gold rooms, etc. No thought to how much did this cost to build and why would there be a...

D&D General Tracy Hickman: The third founder of (modern) D&D?

I do believe Hickman contributed to D&D... He officially introduced Mary Sue to the genre. Pass

    D&D 3E/3.5 Edition Experience - Did/Do you Play 3rd Edtion D&D? How Was/Is it?

I found the best way to get rid of min/maxing was.....wait for it....fluff text. Being a member of an ancient order of protectors is sooooo much cooler than Ftr/Wiz/Rog/Rng/Sor/Bar/Asn/King Slayer/Camel Jockey/Exterminator/Pastry Chef...

An Elf By Any Other Name . . .

When I ran my 3/3.5 campaign everyone believed elves were just like they were in the book, the grand old race that had always been... Until they found a hidden city state that had been separated by a magic protection spell to seal of an ancient dragon.. (oops) and some old religious text soon...

GameHole Con Is My Favorite Convention

I've been to GHC twice, both while working with True Dungeon. I loved the con, but after the wife left, I stopped gaming and conning all together. I came back here recently because of a conversation with a person I met at a gig. When he found out about my gaming roots, it was questions...

D&D 5E Making Monster Weakness Interesting

Great stuff. I love when people dig into monster lore and ecologies. In 1e and 2e kobolds were scoffed at and down played as cut rate goblins until a Dragon ecology article gave them teeth with traps ambushes and swarm tactics. Soon if one heard the chattering of kobolds one either hunkered...

D&D General Edition Experience - Updated Survey Results, Jan 2021 (All Surveys)

Yes. It took some work, sure, but many of the differences were easily rectified (once you learned how. I mean yes there was a learning curve there.) But at the end of the day, their similarities out weighed their differences if you looked at them objectively. Most of the power differences...

    What Shows Would You Make?

I always thought it was hilarious that when the 2nd line of Star Wars figures came out that they based them in the cover of #14 (I think). At the time people complained that while the story was good the artwork was 'too beefy'. And when the figs came out they were called "Steriod Wars" lol..
