Players routinely display "flexible interpretations" of what their deity expects of them which are tailored to suit the player's present circumstances. It's the job of the DM to enforce a standard of proper and acceptable behavior once it's been agreed upon.

This is when metagame or time-out conversations are needed. Whether it concerns the particulars of alignment or the prioritization of glory-seeking as a recruitment tool vs. direct proselytizing, the player and DM need to define what's expected of a cleric before the campaign gets rolling.

Denying spells to wayward or lackadaisical clergy is a tradition that goes all the way back to AD&D. If you want the benefits of channeling divine power, then you need to toe the line when it comes to the policies/worldview of the specific deity or general pantheon your cleric worships.

I cannot relate to what is happening to my old hobby. Should I say anything more, warnings and points would most assuredly follow, so I'll quietly keep on enjoying that which I grew up with a few decades ago just the way I remember it.

This explains much. I've never cared for the Eberron setting, so anything initiated and promulgated within that milieu never made it to my radar screen. As it spreads I take belated notice of it, as I have with Critical Role and Exandria.

Oh, how I hope not to see some of my ideas that I never fully developed re-thought, polished, and in print. The Far Realm/Lovecraft element might just give me a kick in the teeth.
