D&D 4E Forked Thread: Some Thoughts on 4e

If "heroism" is "how much damage I do in a round" to you, play a striker. Those do lots of damage. They are heroic.

    D&D 4E Some Thoughts on 4e

What on earth was going on with clerics anyway? It felt like the class completely changed focus once you hit 9th level and spells like Flame Strike and Blade Barrier which rivalled and were arguably better "blasty" spells than what the wizard got started to appear. Before that you had rubbish...

D&D 4E Forked Thread: Some Thoughts on 4e

Pretty much every time you say "creative" I just hear "broken". Sure, there are lots of uses for being able to fly for an entire combat. However, it invalidates a large chunk of any character without ranged combat options (like many "mundane" characters), or any character who invested in...

D&D 4E Forked Thread: Some Thoughts on 4e

Say what you like about 4e magic, but I'd take pretty much anything over the buff-fest 3e magic turns into at later levels. Players with literally dozens of buffs running at a time who are virtually useless in combat without them is not fun at all. It's even less fun when you get hit by a dispel...

Are some of the basic elements of medieval combat too weak in D&D?

Yeah, this always bugged me in modern games. Hitpoints were supposedly dodging and diving at the last minute leaving the character fatigued for that last hit that takes him down. Trouble is, if the bullet doesn't actually hit the character, how come a .45 calibre round fatigues him more than a...

    Dwarven Weapon Training feat question

I think that this was one of the things they didn't think about when they wrote the eladrin and dwarf feats. By the RAW it's allowable though.

Dragon 368 - Death Matters (But Never Happens)

Three player characters have died in my campaign. Are you giving your party even-level challenges every encounter, or do you mix it up with some easy encounters (party level -2) or some hard encounters (party level +4)? Unless something is seriously wrong (IE: You have some houserule that all...

I think my character is broken. :-(

Make your mind up, man. Edit: Oops, everyone's being nice to him! Er... well, strikers will tend to outshine everyone if you just look at raw damage. I remember the first time someone brought an archery ranger to one of my games, I was blown away as he blew away my monsters with 30-odd damage...

    Balancing Starlock AC

Well, they spend a lot of time at library, not their fault if they don't get out enough.

D&D 4E How does the 4E Barbarian Rage ability work?

Well, outside of superior weapons, your archery ranger will have a longbow for D10 damage (5.5 average) and your "damage barbarian" will be using a maul for 2D6 damage (7.5 average). So there's two points of damage, which doesn't really offset the extra D6-D8 (depending on whether the ranger has...

Ability Checks - Should they be errata'd?

Agreed. When are we ever going to get into the situation where a level 30 halfling and a level 1 minotaur are adventuring together?

    Barbarian Playtest Poll

I'm thinking defender as well. At the end of the day, the barbarian is a close-combat warrior who's at home on the front lines. Rangers and rogues (our other melee strikers) are all about skirmishing through and around the front line, while the barbarian's more about wading in with a huge sword...

Spells in Three Dimensions, Looking for some DM Rulings

This sounds very stupid indeed. I hope it's not a real rule, but not all that much, because it's a rule I would never enforce.

D&D 4E lack of non-combat crunch is my biggest gripe with 4e atm

A combination of things here. It's a bit unfair to include the druid, as he hasn't been released yet. Nothing I've heard, so far at least, says that the 4e druid won't be able to be a giant pterodactyl or equivalent, so that's out. Bull's strength is gone, and good riddance to it and all of...

Is the adventuring day longer in 4th Ed?

My impression is that the adventuring day is longer if the players want it to be. It tends to depend on the difficulty of the encounters. If the first encounter of the day is really hard, and players run out of healing powers (not surges, necessarily) and blow a bunch of dailies, chances are...

    The Videogame comparison

Just as an aside, I really hate Come and Get It but do not think it's really relevant to this thread. It's a crap power, we've had those in all editions of D&D. It doesn't indicate videogame-ness or otherwise.

    Charisma based feat

The first point (healing surges) is valid, but the second really isn't. It isn't difficult at all to have someone in the party who has the Heal skill (I haven't yet seen a party without it) and if you were doing this, why not take the skill yourself?

    Charisma based feat

Wow, that seems like an incredibly good feat (in the right situations). Constitution doesn't do a great deal except for specific builds (infernal warlock, hammer fighter etc) bar providing hitpoints. Dump your constitution down to 8, get your primary stat up to 20, enjoy your 12 free hitpoints.

    D&D 4E Does 4E have disarm?

For this one case, disarming characters will not really unbalance anything, since by level 4 they'll only have quite low-level magic items. It's only at higher levels, where magic items contribute more significantly to attacks and defenses, that disarm really becomes a problem. Paradoxically...

    Minions and hps

Agreed. Angel minions look pretty good too, due to their resistance to fire (and thus Scorching Burst and Flaming Sphere.)
