D&D 5E My D&D Next Experience at DDXP

Glad to see they are getting people in on the ground floor, with this! I hope they take the best of everything that people like from previous editions and 5e playtests and come up with a game that stands on it's own, rather than a hodgepodge mismatch of favorite bits from previous editions...

Boston Game Day: March 10, 2012: GMs and games needed!

Hey PC, how does this event work? Limited invite, gotta run a game to join? Moved up to West of Boston a couple years ago, still adrift in the sea of gamelessness...

Recreating the feeling of actually being in a Labyrinth

Sounds like a flat out maze just won't be possible. I'll just let them map, and then foil their mapping in the most effective way I can come up with, but also doing it in a predictable way so that once they figure out the trick, they'll be able to follow along. Thanks for the tips, guys

Recreating the feeling of actually being in a Labyrinth

Cool ideas to work off of, thanks. I'll try and avoid dragging the dungeon down, we're doing a series of 1 off, short dungeons - should be fun, not painful. Maybe some combination of the above...

Recreating the feeling of actually being in a Labyrinth

I'd like to throw a maze/labyrinth at my players. However, if we're drawing out maps as we go along, it's pretty easy for them to backtrack to rooms by pointing, or just looking at the map and following the pretty picture to where they want to be. How do I get them lost? Failing that, how do I...

Settings: What should come after the Forgotten Realms?

I'd like to see a return to the heyday of Campaign settings. Aside from Eberron (which doesn't really do it for me), there hasn't been anything new. There were all sorts of nifty things in 1e/2e. It's fairly easy to port the old settings forward - let's get something shiny and new. Also, I'd...

Kobolds. They are dog-like, not lizard-like!

Do you really want dials and options?

I wouldn't mind dials and options. However, I'd like this to be presented in a clear fashion. Preferably, I'd like a default "simple" option. A basic set of core rules. We could then have "Intermediate" and "Advanced," each with more switches set to on. Each of those should explicitly explain...

    Moving the game along

Holy Bananas! A lot of stuff, here. This is exactly the problem. We once spent about an hour and a half naming a boat. I'm both player and DM, depending on the week. I definitely think the group believes there is an issue here, in general, there are a lot of comments about the length of...

    Moving the game along

The real problem is that not much roleplaying goes on during these delays. It's a lot of out of character chatter. They'll get going in character, and then break character and discuss who has the best armor, or the best weapon for the job. There's been 4 hour sessions where we explore 1 room...

    Moving the game along

We do bring in some wandering monsters on occasion. On some of the times where I've DM'd, I've started 10 second countdowns. I guess we could try throwing more random encounters at the players - much of the slow down does happen outside of combat. I'm always cautious about the Caller idea...

    Moving the game along

So...my group, while we have fun, has an issue. Our games drag. We get caught up in things, and a 4-5 hour game session might involve a single encounter and exploring maybe 2 rooms. It seems to be a pretty wide issue, spanning different rules-systems. We'll spend half an hour discussing whether...

Does Having 3 Core Books Hurt The Game?

One package would be nice...make the PHB all you need to play (in other words, stick the advancement and XP tables in there...) and actually make the DMG supplemental and more useful for DMs. I like the way White Wolf (yeah yeah...) used to do it, one book with all the rules to play, then...

    I probably ruined my battlemat!

I've heard writing over the lines with wet erase or dry erase markers (can't remember which...) works pretty well. Rubbing alcohol also could be a good bet. Congrats on the marriage! I hope she roleplays!

Does Having 3 Core Books Hurt The Game?

The only way I really see having three core books hurt is if a new group, with all new players and a new DM starts up...but even then you can share a PHB and perhaps the cost of the other two books. The other problem I see is on the edition changes...because then we have to buy those three...

    Word Processor or Legal Pad?

My campaign ideas/character concepts/setting ideas/etc usually begin in notebooks that I SHOULD be using to take notes for class... After that I usually type them up in some logical format. From there, it could end up on more notebooks, or more on my computer.

    Palladium/Rifts--what's your opinion?

I'm personally fond of Rifts. With a little tweaking, the rules are bearable, and I love the setting. I think its all matter of personal preference, and what you're willing to put up with. If you are willing to put up with the inconsistencies, and you like the over-the-top post-apocolyptic...

New In-Game Slang Based On Your Games

Tomba Roll: An awesome idea/plan that goes horribly wrong. Origin: From a player (who's character was named Tomba), who would come up with great looking ideas to accomplish something, but then end up botching the roll miserably.
