Not to pick a nit, but where in the world did you see clerics with maces, casting holy magic in movies?

    [LPF] Return to Boar's Ridge

Darvus Andar, Paladin of Helerion Darvus is unsure of his mount and his own ability, and grips the reins tightly. At the appearance of the griffons, he tightens his grip and yells, "EASY!" Whether is was the wrong or right thing to do; Darvas has no way of knowing. But after the initial...

    D&D 5E D&D Next: Let's discuss it's mass multimedia goal.

One thing Marvel did successfully was boosting good character stories into good cast movies. Adding Black Widow to Captain America; adding Nick Fury to Iron Man. Heck, the latest Cap Am movies felt more like an ensemble movie like Avengers. So if I were making a D&D movie, I'd ask what's...

    D&D 5E D&D Next: Let's discuss it's mass multimedia goal.

I think games like KOTOR and Neverwinter Nights show that the 3.5 model is the one best suited to video games, because it follows the same "white attack" model with special abilities that is prevalent with MMO's. A 4E video game could never work because the expectations of modern fantasy combat...

    D&D 5E D&D Next: Let's discuss it's mass multimedia goal.

I hate to say it, but there is only one property that fulfills the parameters listed above that will have broad cross-media appeal. We're sick of him, but outsiders to the fantasy gaming/literature genre will probably find a certain dark elf ranger (who shall not be named!) more appealing than...

    [LPF] Return to Boar's Ridge

Darvus turns away from the cage to make sure he isn't losing stragglers. The cage, and whatever is in it, is to him a needless diversion. Satisfied that the pace is good, he continues on his way. Darvus Andar AC: 16 (15 flat-footed, 11 touch) HP: 11/11 CMB: +5 CMD: 16 Fort: +3 Reflex: +1...

What movie? There was no movie. Who's Jeremy Irons? Never heard of him. Next existed. :p

And this is good for every publisher in the market; D&D is still THE feeder game.

D&D 5E Does 5E avoid the overloads of previous editions?

From reading you guys' posts on EnWorld, I would definitely describe you both as "non-partisan" in the edition wars. To clarify my earlier statement, when I said "The ones that want it to go in another direction are gone" I meant the people for whom 3.x IS D&D and all others are pretenders. I...

D&D 5E Does 5E avoid the overloads of previous editions?

This is the money quote. Vast multimedia drive decouples D&D's revenue stream from the edition treadmill. Fewer plats, more ancillary products.

D&D 5E Does 5E avoid the overloads of previous editions?

The ones that want it to go in another direction are gone, and they are not coming back. They're with Pathfinder, for better or for worse. WotC will not win them back, ever, and I don't think it's wise to devote energy to a futile strategy in winning them back.

    Monsters based on logical fallacies

The No True Scotsman is a plaid-wearing ruffian whose unique supernatural ability is to gain immunity to the first type attack made against it (because no true scotsman would suffer damage from a mere fireball!) The No True Scotsman cannot caveat his way out of subsequent attacks, however!

    D&D 5E Simulation vs Game - Where should D&D 5e aim?

Simulationism fails pretty hard, IMO, because natural outcomes do not arise organically out of incomplete simulations. A 300 page PHB is NOT going to provide a complete enough simulation to avoid the absurd or nonsensical outcomes arising from the compounding levels of imprecision in the rules...

    [LPF] Return to Boar's Ridge

Darvus eyes the approaching dome warily. To no one in particular, he says, "I'm not sure I understand the purpose of all these pens. Surely no one in the city has use for such creatures?" Darvus Andar AC: 16 (15 flat-footed, 11 touch) HP: 11/11 CMB: +5 CMD: 16 Fort: +3 Reflex: +1 Will: +1...

    D&D 5E Live Q&A with D&D R&D

Given the propensity for clerics being relegated to NPC status, I would suggest that we need an alternative. Because no one in any group I've been in will play a traditional cleric. It's always an NPC.

How many hit points do you have?

In my 1E game, all new players/characters started at level 1. If you had a henchman, could use that henchman as your new character if your old one died (a frequent occurrence). For this reason, most of my players had a "favored" henchman that was always in the dungeon with them, collecting XP...

D&D 5E What conceits are necessary for 5E world design?

I feel like it was at least strongly encouraged in 3.x and 4E due to the vital role magic items played in character progression. In addition, 4E introduced (rather let me say exacerbated; 3E had this too to a lesser extent) the problem of the arms race between PC's and NPC's. When the PC's...

    D&D 5E Live Q&A with D&D R&D

This is something I feel 4E definitely did right; by giving the cleric abilities that did all of the above, the cleric was fun to play while filling its traditional role quite well. "Heal as you hit" may have been a narrative departure from traditional healing, but quite frankly the traditional...
