What Makes A Horror Campaign Scary?

Excellent recommendation. In the first Call of Cthulhu game I played in we were investigating an abandoned haunted house. Throughout the session my GM would throw in descriptions of "encounters" with a big, fat black housefly. It seemed like everywhere we went in the house, that fly would...

What do you eat when gaming?

That sounded to me like an unpleasantly frigid BBQ until I realized we're in different hemispheres!

    Dumb Movies

I have not seen Skyline but the How Did This Get Made podcast reviewed it and had one of the writers explain its development. It was pretty interesting.

    Fantasy RPGs for Kids

I gotcha. (I apologize for the hard sell--I'm a big fan of Fate.) FAE is very amenable to immediately sitting down and playing for any setting because the system doesn't dwell on crunch. The system doesn't try to emulate the difference in shield rating on X-wings and B-wings and doesn't try...

D&D 5E DMG Excerpt: Wonderous Items

Peanut butter and ochre jelly sandwiches are delightful.

D&D 5E Classic or just plain brilliant adventures/modules

My favorite modules that would be fun in 5th Edition are: The Dragonlance module Dragon's Rest (2nd Ed.) The Silver Key (2nd Ed.) The Gate of Firestorm Peak (2nd Ed.) Ptolus (3.x Ed.)

    Fantasy RPGs for Kids

I was going to recommend picking up a copy of the main rulebook on eBay but it's surprisingly expensive right now. Out of curiosity, what is it about not having a built in setting that makes you hesitant? In my experience FAE stays out of the crunchy weeds and it's mechanics are forgiving...

    Fantasy RPGs for Kids

I haven't tried it but I think 6-9 year olds could understand WEG's d6 Star Wars system fairly easily. The character sheets can be very simple. And you could help them navigate the mechanics to make a character with the skills and aptitudes they want. I think Fate Accelerated...

    Dumb Movies

To me The Village seemed adequate for a half hour Tales From the Crypt episode but couldn't sustain a full length movie. The dumbest movie I've seen is Southland Tales. It's not entertaining to watch dumb, like Plan 9. It painfully thinks it's a good movie. I would rather watch Highlander 2...

D&D 5E Your Players Stole a Pirate Ship and Made Way for the Seas. Now What?

You could have them backtrack their ship's previous route to find a huge treasure that the pirates once buried. Or an Admiral might enlist them to backtrack their ship's route to find some artifact that the pirates once had. I think it would be interesting if a kraken took an interest in their...

    Top 10 Science Fiction RPGS

Hurm. I don't think I've played in ten sci-fi RPGs but I'll give it a go. 1. My favorite is Star Wars. I haven't played in the FFG version but I'm very eager to. I loved the d6 version, we played the heck out of it. The d20 version was not my cup of tea. SAGA was better but again, not my...

What are your weaknesses as a DM/GM?

A good solution for this is to use a roleplayer who isn't in your group as a sounding board for your big bad's plans. My friends who live in other states will tell me about their campaign plots or session plans and get my opinion about whether the plan makes sense from an outsider's view. If...

What are your weaknesses as a DM/GM?

It's worth considering. GMs that I've seen improve the most are the ones that have dialogues with their players about how to improve their GMing. In my experience this lead to constructive criticisms and tips that makes them a better GM.

What are your weaknesses as a DM/GM?

Instead of your NPCs reacting with hostility you could have them cut ties with the party. One instance of threatening someone should have them dry up as resource the party can count on. Or you could have the aggressive PC gain a negative reputation. The local constables would be wary of the...

    D&D 5E Likes and Dislikes?

I like the streamlined, simplified rules. I miss at-wills. I dislike that fighting classes rely on a simple melee or ranged attack as their bread and butter. To me at-wills make combats more interesting and don't preclude the players from trying something creative with their attack.

D&D 5E There's something surprising I miss about 4th edition and it's not what you think.

I liked the content in Essentials but I disliked the digest format. But I prefer digest format much more than boxed sets. (I miss at-wills. To me they made combats more interesting and didn't have the versimilitude breaking issue of martial encounter and daily powers. [Although I have no...

D&D 5E How do you feel about the Forgotten Realms?

I often hear this sort of argument against FR. I have limited experience with FR (one 2E campaign and one 4E campaign) but we never crossed paths with the high level NPCs. If the high level NPCs have too much potential to steal the spotlight, is there a reason to simply not include them in...

D&D 5E Class and Background combos

I made a Criminal protection fighting style Fighter. He was formerly a bodyguard and enforcer for a criminal organization until his partner was killed. Now he's trying to assuage his guilt by bodyguarding his dead partner's naive, lawabiding younger brother (played by another player).
