D&D 5E Raise your hand if your mom...

My folks never took issue with my brother and I playing D&D but I suppose since we started in 1992 we missed most of the D&D hysteria. However a bit later we started playing Magic and my aunt came to use with the same misinformed concerns. After explaining to her that it was really a game...

D&D 5E Raise your hand if your mom...

My folks never bothered my brother and I about playing D&D but I guess starting in 1992 meant we were past the more hysterical times. However, a little bit later we started playing Magic and my aunt came to us with the same sort of misinformed concerns. After explaining it was really just a...

    How is fate?

Fate is a pretty versatile system but out of the box I don't think it will fulfill this requirement. The way you build your character and aspects can make the characters play differently and they can be different narratively. But it's a classless system with a lean skill list. I'm sure you...

    D&D 5E Monsters You Miss

You're really pushing for a froghemoth!

    D&D 5E What can I teach a sorcerer?

The mages don't need to teach the sorcerer how to cast the spells because she already knows how to. But they provide her with camaraderie, a place to stay, and they tutor her how to use the spells well. But that's just what the guild tells the naïve sorcerer. Really the guild is studying the...

[Dread] Jenga beat up my dice! My results from the indie horror RPG.

Something similar happen in a game I ran. About two-thirds of the way through my friend had bad luck and knocked over the tower. I used the Dead Man Walking rule to keep him in the game but he forgot about it when the climax of the story rolled around. His captain was about to be attacked so...

D&D 5E What Subclasses would you like to see?

I agree with you on both counts. Who do I need to talk to at Wizards to make this happen?

    D&D 5E Optimal Multiclassing

(Your wife likely already considered this but...) She could wrap all of the backstory (orphaned, thievery to survive, etc.) into the character's background--something like Criminal, Urchin, or a custom background. Then take only levels of Monk to demonstrate the time since the old grandmaster...

    Alternate Wild Magic Surge Tables

I would change that to Reincarnate for extra random wonderfulness.

D&D 5E What are the "coolest" abilities in 5e?

That would gel well with the ability to read lips that is granted by the Observant feat. I imagine the barbarian staring at the orcish general from across a battlefield. "He just told the wolf riders to act like they fled, then circle around to our flank. Send two units to ambush them on...

D&D 5E What are the "coolest" abilities in 5e?

I love the berserker barbarian's fear instilling ability. I'm sure it has combat uses but the ability to frighten NPCs in social situations sounds incredible.

D&D 5E Any interest in the not-quite-so-wild mage?

Good point, I never really considered that. For me it's all about the wild surges. If the class had a more mundane means to regenerate rolls with advantage (regenerates after a rest, or something), I would probably would gloss over it.

D&D 5E Any interest in the not-quite-so-wild mage?

Definitely! I love wild mages but I have a difficult time developing a non-wacky personality/demeanor for a wild mage sorcerer that gels with wacky stuff like turning into a potted plant. Once you're done with the new wild surge chart are you going to start on the 5E Binder class or is it...

    Quick Question on adapting FATE

The 5th Edition rules say you're only allowed one reaction per turn. But you could houserule that you can have three reactions.

    Quick Question on adapting FATE

No worries, you don't seem belligerent to me and it's okay to have incompatible preferences. If by "actor stance all the time" you mean the player only speaks in character, Fate won't accomodate that well. But it excels at constantly engaging the player with the essential elements of their...

    Quick Question on adapting FATE

One thing to be wary about is that you can have too many aspects. You don't need a ton of aspects to capture the core concepts of most characters and having too many means that some very rarely come into play. In Dresden Files you have seven, Fate Core pared that down to five because , and...

    Quick Question on adapting FATE

I think if you removed compels and fate points you'd defang the system. It can still work without them but it'll be a very simple skill based system, similar to WEG's d6 system. My friend is running a fantasy campaign in Fate. Since it is the group's first exposure to Fate he decided to not...

Gaming group in need of new game

The D&D Boardgames (Castle Ravenloft, Wrath of Ashardalon, and Legend of Drizzt) are cooperative boardgames that are D&D themed. They're fun games but they're not roleplaying games, so they might not satisfy your itch. I LOVE Sentinels. It's a fantastic game. I can play it over and over...

D&D 5E How would you make a character who uses a shield like Captain America?

The protection focused Basic fighter would be thematically appropriate. It allows the fighter to give disadvantage on an enemy's attack on an ally, if the ally is within five feet and the fighter is wielding a shield.

D&D 5E Minor rant - y'ever just hate your players' characters?

Or a trip to Eberron would work. Changelings and warforged originated in the Eberron setting, Eberron has dinosaur-riding halflings, and there's a guild who harnesses elementals to power stuff like trains. It might be a good fit for their tastes.
