    Hydras and AoOs

I get real tired of the vitriol that gets spouted about this sort of question (some people have STRONG opinions) so I'll just give mine and leave it at that. In my game I have thrown a couple of hydras at the party and they were able to take 1 AoO whenever anybody provoked one, up to the number...

Half elf....Half something other than human?

My thoughts: Humans can (and will probably try to) breed with any other race. Maybe the others are a little more picky. Elves don't like big hair so no Dwelfs. They don't like the idea of mating with children so no Helflings. They really don't like Orcs and Gnomes are just too silly. Dwarves...

What would you do - xp award

I wouldn't give the 3rd player XPs for defeating the patrol. Wasn't there, doesn't get paid. Same as if the party do some adventuring before a player or two turn up. I would have given XPs for successfully camouflaging the camp, but I might have setup a smaller encounter for the 3rd player...

On using minis in D&D - approach of AD&D1 vs. D&D3

At the beginning of my gaming experience (1975) I didn't use figures but, when AD&D (1e) came out and my gaming group expanded, we started using them and have done so ever since. Initially, they were useful for showing marching order and for positioning (and facing, of course) during combat...

How do you keep your group together?

Our group has peaked at 10 members and over the last 25 years the gaming has gone from 2-3 times a week down to weekly with a couple of players only doing every other week and a couple of others having a lot of RL stuff that keeps them away from the table. And we start later and finish earlier...

    Several related questions

No, no and no. It is OK to restrict your game to PHB races, not allow prestige classes, have a low magic setting, whatever you want. The mistake would be not telling your players until they are rolling up their Tiefling Mega-Blade who is aiming for the Ultra-Killer-Slasher PrC. Good DMing...

    Poll: PC Death

PCs die in my game. I don't fudge the dice. I accept that some DMs feel the need to fudge dice to keep PCs alive but I've never felt that myself. Death is part of the game and my players understand that. If the PCs are wandering about, killing things, why shouldn't there be repercussions? it's...

A more gestalt approach to multiclassing

OK, I've reread the OP to make sure I read it right first time. A player has to take 2 different classes at the start (primary + favoured or favoured/primary + secondary) or take only the favoured class and get a free feat. Whoopdedoo, can't see many people taking the last option. Why not...

    Skinning a creature?

Survival, certainly. Skinning animals is all part of preparing them for cooking. Would probably include cleaning/preparing hides as well. I guess that to make them more presentable you'd need an appropriate craft skill, though.

A more gestalt approach to multiclassing

Are you distinguishing between Arcane and Divine or are Wizard/Clerics just as screwed as Wizard/Sorcerers? Why would anyone be a Wizard/Sorcerer anyway? Seems a bit unfair to someone who wants to play their favoured class alone. Am I right in inferring that you are effectively forcing...

Every Ability Score Affects Saving Throws

I really don't see the problem with multi-classing, though I appreciate that the OP has a bug about it. His idea would indeed make characters tougher and better set to survive what the GM throws at them but I don't see it as necessary. Does the OP intend making multi-classing more difficult as...

    The Toughness Feat

I added Hardiness (+1HP/level) and Extra Hardiness (+1HP/level, stacks). One player took Hardiness and no-one took Toughness.

    Core-Only Advice

My first thought was Druid as well. Perhaps with a Dire Rat companion, which should fit into the urban setting.

    Align this character.

Very interesting thread. The main thing it shows IMO is that the alignment system is poorly understood.

    Align this character.

I was going with LE until the last item. Siring an army seems a pretty self-centred thing to do which would be NE, but all the other stuff points to LE. Basically, this character doesn't conform to the D&D alignment system. Maybe he has multiple personalities.

200 gnomes, in a boat, no wind. Help.

What type of Gnomes are they? If they are Garden Gnomes they should have Fishing Rod as part of their starting kit. Attach their pointy hats on the ends of the fishing rods and use them as makeshift oars. Better still, hang half of them over the side and get them to swim, pulling the ship along.

GAHH!! Time to take a break from 3.5

I pretty much agree with the OP, in that I am not turned on by 3.5. As a player, I like the knowledge that, most levels, I will get a powerup. As a GM, I dislike the knowledge that, every level, the party will become more of a pain to challenge. My campaign is 4-book Core and I can't begin to...

How would you rate your group's OOC chatter?

Generally 18-rated but, now we've got a couple of teenagers in the group, we try to keep it to 15, but we don't try too hard.

    Half Elves...Wtf... :P

I take it that by 'mechanically crippled race' you mean that you don't think there is sufficient gain to balance losing the Human bonus feat and skill points? You may be right but I don't think so. Half Elves are not really weaker but might be seen as a 'flavour race'. IMC I gave various...

    TWF with offhand attacks

In no particular order: Greatsword is a 2-handed weapon so you don't get off-hand attacks when wielding one. There probably is a feat in one of the twinkbooks that allows a Monk to use a Longsword as a Monky weapon. Haven't seen it but I expect it to exist. Unarmed strikes can be used as...
