    Romanesque world setting?

Thanks Nellisir! Great news!! I can't see any announcement about it at Green Ronin, but there is a thread on their messageboards about it with some titbits: http://www.greenronin.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=5966 Apparantly it will be out in about June.

Why no index is new WotC books? *Update: Received "official" answer... kinda...*

An online index might be a useful supplement, but really if I'm paying $80 (AUS) for a book with high production values (artwork, paper, binding) I don't want to have to print out some scungy A4 to keep with it, just so I can find what I need. Add another vote for bringing back the index!

    Is 3rd edition too "quantitative"

OK, maybe 'guidelines' was the wrong word. I should have said it's a reasonably wide ranging and detailed ruleset for weighing up encounters (with the magic assistance level assumption, true - annoying), judging the success of actions, etc. True, it's not a completely generic toolbox. But that...

    Is 3rd edition too "quantitative"

Not at all. I started with Rolemaster and later looked at Gurps (among others) before picking up D&D with 3.0 - not systems really big on fluff. It definitely hasn't made me into a rules lawyer or a tactician. The game is nothing without the imagination of the GM and players. Maybe the PHB will...

[Red Star] Hook & Pins in Non-Modern Setting?

Hi all I've just picked up Green Ronin's Red Star setting (very cool!) One thing that has caught my fancy is the idea of using the 'Hook' and maybe the Sha-Osk pins in a more D&D setting or tech level. (Minus the grenade launcher and machine gun options, of course.) Perhaps as the signature...

Just gotta ask ... what's "jump the shark"?

    Archetypal vs. Menu-style characters

I voted Archetypal, although plenty of flexibility and options is important. Asmor and Remathilis's comments on the first page pretty much cover why. Just one more thing - if using a point buy system, it's really important that the point costs for things are well balanced, so that you can...

    Books Bought on Reviews/Recommendations?

I tend to check out EN World discussion and reviews about anything I'm going to buy or are on the fence about. The only exception was Hamunaptra, because I was positively going to buy it anyway and didn't want to read anything that would make waiting for it worse :) There are only a couple of...

    Slavery and evil

This 'innnocents' thing that keeps coming up bothers me, and the argument that (in D&D) it is OK to do bad things to bad people (eg hurt, kill) but not to 'innocents'. This seems to me a slippery slope because 'innocent' is a) absolutist and b) has to be judged subjectively. Even in D&D...

Why _DON'T_ You Buy Dragon Magazine?

Wow. I'm sold. Thanks very much Eric for this thread - for asking, for listening, and for replying so well. I was negative about Class Acts when I posted earlier, but after your explanation I appreciate why they'll be staying. It sounds like there will be enough else in there for me :D Reading...

What is the most despised race?

Oh, a new trick! Let me try this sblock thing. First let me say, I am not arguing that drow *are* evidence or racism or sexism in anyone, and I can see the differences between drow and 'black' people, and the way you can get drow by reversing many of the preestablished elf stereotypes. All...

What is the most despised race?

Oh Gez - thanks for the cartoons!

What is the most despised race?

Hi Darkness OK, but if we need any more posts we'd better start a new thread, OK? :) Take just one of the factors for example. There are many races/cultures with patriarchal systems in D&D. The government system, thus, is not suggested to have an intrinsic alignment. If there is only one...

What is the most despised race?

Sorry, did I misunderstand? I thought you were saying that if there was only one evil race of this type/s, this did not suggest possible 'isms'. I was saying that, even if only one of the evil races is of this type/s, if there are no non-evil races of the same type/s it *is* still suggestive...

What is the most despised race?

Definitely halflings. They always seem to be either kender or hobbits - both massively annoying. Gnomes have lots of annoyance potential but are hardly ever played in our games. I haven't really run into the gully dwarf thing outside the novels, but yeah that would be bad. Basically I guess my...

    No Homosexuality in my Campaign?

Exactly! That's the point! And you know why? It's because we are not trying to compare them. We are not having a discussion about the merits or otherwise of homosexuality - in fact we are avoiding that like anything, to keep the thread open. FWIW, I don't think everything needs to be designed...

3e and the Test of Time

Maybe. Maybe not. Some of the campign settings and stuff, some of the great 3rd party products, perhaps. But really, why do we care? I submit that it is much more important from the point of view of survival and growth of the hobby that new players take it up and stick with it, whether they...

    How to tell the PCs...

Hey Galeros, Sympathy for your awkward situation. There were a couple of useful ideas upthread on how to explain this specific issue to your players. Not that it should be too hard. I mean heck, this one is right in the MM in black & white, what are they complaining about? But it seems like the...

Those groups where no one ever dies

A game world just feels realler to me, as a player, if it contains things more dangerous than me and I am not guaranteed only to meet things I can kill. This also makes us think about other ways of dealing with things. If I can kill any obstacle I meet, why would my fighter do anything else? I...

Why _DON'T_ You Buy Dragon Magazine?

Hi At the moment I still buy Dragon, but I've reluctantly decided to stop with the December edition. Reluctantly because I have nearly every one since 3E. I haven't always loved everything in the mag, but there's always been enough that engaged the imagination, and the non ideal stuff didn't...
