    Can the GM cheat?

I think if you want that kind of narrative, you'd be better off finding a mechanical way to support it. Instead of fudging dice yourself, give the players some agency by letting them spend "story points" to reroll things, which are earnt by them roleplaying. Make sure you create the situation...

How many "random encounters" is too much?

But when they find out the farmer was a lookout all along, then, from then on, they're never quite sure if a Random Encounter is really a Random Encounter. It's no longer safe to ASSUME it's unrelated. And that's not a semantic difference at all; it's a psychological difference.

MYTH a fully cooperative fantasy game

Really wish I could afford a new game at the moment, because this looks really cool. Out of interest, why's the shipping cheaper than it normally is for a board-game?

I was replying to James, who was talking about a real, physical, bar upon which "invisibility" had been cast. Such a bar would have to be fixed to the wall, and therefore not move.

Presumably they knew the precise location, given as it doesn't move, negating the miss chance. An adventurer who'd simply been told about it would have the miss chance however...

Character Cards - Instant NPC Just Add Water!

Character Cards are a deck of playing cards, each of which describes a unique character that you can instantly insert into your roleplaying game. They're designed to fit easily into any fantasy game, and work as a portable game aid. We're currently taking a vote on what our stretch goals...

    Can the GM cheat?

When you take that one section entirely out of context, it's quite clear. It's when it's in the context of a big thing about how you won't roll in this situation or that because story trumps rules that it becomes unclear. In the larger context it seems like you mean "I won't always bother with...

    Can the GM cheat?

Everything you've said, to me, indicates "We won't roll dice when story decides it" rather than "I'll roll dice and then ignore the results". Which are very different things. I never ignore the dice once I've rolled them, but I'll often choose not to roll them as a GM when I feel there's an...

    Presenting challenging decisions

Personally I love when you can pull off a choice between right and other right. ie. Rather than "Choose which innocent dies" it's "Are you going to take out the young dragon, or the orc army's new leader" It's harder to do, but it's really rewarding. I like to present at least one difficult...

How many "random encounters" is too much?

This depends on what the significance of them is. I don't like filler-episodes where nothing relevant happens; but if they often tie into the main plot in some way then I'm happy to have up to 2 sessions of them.

I'm a big fan of *moving* the pit. They see a pit that's just about jumpable/bridgeable; and right where that pit seems to end is where the real pit begins.

Without A Net: Improv And Your Game

I've almost always improv-ed everything other than 1) a plot hook I hope they'll bite and 2) NPCs; because it takes me a bit of time to make them up (but I just built up a database of them that I can draw from instead)

    Can the GM cheat?

If you claim not to fudge, and you do fudge, you're cheating. If you never make that claim, it's less clear but I tend towards "let the dice fall where they may". If you know what outcome you want, don't roll for it. If the party's imbalanced, find a way to deal with that that doesn't involve...

    Experience Point: Downtime

We rarely/never actually play them out as full sessions, but often a storyline will begin or end with a bit of downtime. It helps fill out the end when a storyline finishes early, and fill in the beginning when we're waiting for someone to turn up. And it does add a lot, because the places that...

Struggling with Swordmage //Questions about monster

I'd be tempted to do the opposite: A fight where they actively try to focus anyone other than him, forcing him to make the most of his abilities. Because sometimes you need to ignore the defender. By the RAW they're separate attacks. Personally, I always ruled it as multiple attacks BUT the...

Kickstarter Things I learned about Kickstarter

Information like this is gold when planning; there's so much skill involved in running a kickstarter that I'd never be able to work out even half of it on my own.

Of course, the health of the body actually has a massive impact on the functioning of the brain. So even if you only care about your mind, exercise is still very helpful.
