Expand the scope of mundane lore

Magic vs. Mastercraft, for items Magic vs. natural for creatures. Magic vs. martial for combat ability. Magic vs. skillful for out-of-combat capability. There isn't really a good catch-all that I can think. Because Mundane doesn't work for things that are fantasy, but not magic.

    Constitution and HP

In every edition other than 3.x, if playing by the Rules As Written, your constitution contributes a larger percentage of your HP at level 1 than at level 20. In 4e, your constitution is added to your HP at first level, and has no effect thereafter [and though healing surges may be relevant, con...

    +2 max for magic items?

+X items can't solve those concerns though. The +X can easily be baked into the class.

    +2 max for magic items?

This may be so, however 4e broke that design principle, and I don't think there are many people clamouring to bring it back.

    +2 max for magic items?

If the fighter needs +6 to hit and damage at level 20, in order to keep up with the wizard: GIVE THEM +6 TO HIT AND DAMAGE Designing the game so that fighters only keep up if the GM hands them +X magic items on time is silly.

    +2 max for magic items?

I'd actually be perfectly happy with +1 as the maximum plus. However, +2 is fine too. What I want is for there to be weapons, etc. that lack the +, but are still preferable to a weapon with the +. 4e deliberately chose not to provide this, and it was felt (I think it's a big factor in the...

    Level Titles

Which of these sounds better: "I am a master of dragons for I study the dragon style" or "I am a master of dragons because I've not got enough XP to become a master of the north wind yet" Being called an Acolyte only sounds better because it doesn't seem like it's referring to their level...

    Level Titles

Even there: What if I want to focus on abilities associated with the dragon school? I have to become a Grand Master of Flowers anyway? The problem with names by level is that they're never just names for levels of prowess, they always have other connotations. ie. Evoker: One who uses Evocation...

    Bring back the magnificently mundane!

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: I want Mastercraft Items to be treated the same as Magic Items. Sure, making them is different. But a +1 sword could just as easily be fine craftsmanship as an enchantment. And there are some properties (ie. enhanced crit, better for opportunity...

Game design trap - Starting too close to zero.

I agree, damage is an example of diminishing returns. But attack bonus isn't. D20 rolls just aren't in that category, because of how the game functions. So, having the damage expression be significant even for a weak wizard is possible. But, the thing is, I don't want a game built on the...

Game design trap - Starting too close to zero.

Err, no. D20s don't really do diminishing returns, especially if you're adjusting the DCs to suit your new minimum. Multiplicative things (like that Speed example) do diminishing returns. Damage does diminishing returns. Skill bonuses don't get diminishing returns until they start making skill...

Game design trap - Starting too close to zero.

There are, however, several reasons to have the lowest possible character level not be the default starting level. The lowest possible level should allow people to play farmhands getting sucked into an adventure. The default starting level should allow people to be significant right from the...

    L&L 3/05 - Save or Die!

Is it Medusa Gorgon, the Epic Tier Solo, or is it A medusa, one of the myriad low-level threats? Because looking Medusa Gorgon in the eye is very different from looking a feeble copy in the eye. If someone wanted to look A medusa in the eye, they'd take a penalty to their defenses/save against...

How long should a round represent?

Increasing the length of a round only means decreasing the number of rounds if you think the length of a combat (in seconds) is right. Given as a typical combat is over in under a minute, many in under 30 seconds, with 6-second rounds, I think there's plenty of room for stretching it out a bit.

How long should a round represent?

My personal preference leans towards longer rounds, for simple reason of drama. If a round is 6 seconds, it doesn't matter whether you take 5 or 10, you're still done in under a minute. If they take 30 seconds, those extra 5 rounds is 2 and a half minutes. That could make more of a difference...

How long should a round represent?

Simple question: how long do you think one combat round should represent in the game world? 6 seconds? A minute? Somewhere in between?

Balance bwtween Class, Race, and Background

I voted 75% class, but I want to be able to move that up and down by making choices. Picking up racial abilities, background abilities, or class abilities should be able to move it between 90% and about 40-50% (and if you go for a racial class, then race gets more important without class getting...

    Critical Hits

I like maximum damage+ something extra for crits. The extra is fine to come after a confirmation roll. I also think that fighters should get bonus effects on a crit.

    What's the Problem with Save-or-Die?

I think there needs to be a list of situations that automatically count (ie. any time someone is in combat and not surprised) and ones that automatically count as non-life-threatening (ie. a guard sitting at his post, bored, playing a card game) with the proviso "and the GM makes a ruling for...
