Hypothetical: If DnD had never existed, BUT...

MMM.... the first text-only game was Adventure (granddaddy of zork), and it appeared in 1972, before DnD, so I dunno about your argument. I think it's very likely that the text-based adventures would have evolved into rogue/nethack, MUDs and graphical RPGs on their own, without the influence...

What are your feelings on combat mats?

Never used mats in DnD, or AD&D 1E. When I decided to give 3E a try, I bought one. So far, It's been pretty handy for resolving flanking, etc... As a DM, it has made me play some of the monsters smarter. I too, have had some of the fretting over maneuvers. I solved that with one phrase...

    Book Recommendations

All of the Fafhrd and Grey Mouser stuff by Fritz Leiber. The Thieve's World stuff is great as well. Also, the merlin series by Mary Stewart was great. They are: The Crystal Cave, The Hollow Hills, and The Last Enchantment. I think there was a 4th, but I never read it.

When was the Dragon Magazine at it's best?

Dragon was the best when it was the most useful to you, and that is different to everyone. Issues in the low 30s to the low 100s seemed to be most useful to me. Todays stuff is bordering on useless to me. It's been a long time since I cracked open a copy and went "Wow!". That's probably...

[spin-off] 3E is NOT "dumbed down."

I hope this thread doesn't de-generate further into bickering about XDnD versus other systems. It's bad enough with just 1E vs. 3E :D I'm not some kind of roleplay vs. hackfest snob, but I can tell you that I don't think it would make much difference in overall enjoyment if my current 3E...

How about a survey on the 3E halfling?

No halflings in my home-brew 3E world, and only partly because of the 3E treatment of them. I have 3 distinct cultures of elf, 2 of dwarf, 1 of gnome. I didn't do halflings because a) no room for them and b) didn't want to write-up anymore cultures. Also, there are no orcs (as i duck for...

    [OT] Favorite Band?

My favorite band? The garage band I played in back in high school. Listening is great, playing is better, and man did we have fun. As far as bands you would care about: #1 would be Rush, followed in no particular order by: Zepplin, The Who, Rob Zombie, House of Pain, Soundgarden, Boston...

[spin-off] 3E is NOT "dumbed down."

Nope, your point was clear. That post was in response to someone who didn't understand whay some diehards refuesed to give up 1E. Just normal thread mutation, I guess.

    About running a campaign in a town/city

FASA put out a couple of modules for the TW setting as well. If you can dig 'em up, Gamelords had a series called Thieve's Guild (I think). A buddy of mine had them in middle school. I remember being impressed back then, but I dunno if they'd hold up to my 33 year old mind now. Would dearly...

[spin-off] 3E is NOT "dumbed down."

Well, when the players are trying to build their chars, and are angling for a particular prestige class down the road, you have to be aware of at least that particular PrC so you can decide if it will fit your game down the road. Again, i'm not complaining, it's part of being the DM. However...

    [OT] Good things...

    1) Being part of a wonderful marriage. 2) The first, genuine, non-gas induced ,smile from my 2 month old I got about a week and a half ago. (parents will understand what I mean) 3) Explaining something to my 3.5 year old, and seeing the delight in his face when he "gets it". 4) having...

[spin-off] 3E is NOT "dumbed down."

Re: Re: [spin-off] 3E is NOT "dumbed down." I agree 100%. As someone who plays both, I can tell that 3E hasn't made an impact on most of the people still playing 1E (at least the ones that I know, anyway). It's been my experience that most of the people sticking with 1E are just plain happy...

[spin-off] 3E is NOT "dumbed down."

Well, the group I still play 1E with doesn't want to shell out for new books. Nor do they want to bother to learn a new system. We all have jobs, wives, kids, other hobbies, households to maintain, cars to service, etc... All of these things take time and money. The time to sit down and read...
