    D&D 5E The 5E Magic User

I can actually see the 3e and 4e wizards fitting in the page count of the 5e PHB. 1) You include a vancian wizard, very much like the 3e wizard, complete with a giant spell section in the back of the book. This guy is called a "wizard". 2) You include a class called "evoker", who gets 2...

Illustrated OD&D Wandering Monster tables poster

Hey guys, I finally did another print run, and I have a bunch of posters waiting to be bought ($7.50). Buy one! As a reminder, they look like this, except bigger (24 inches tall):

    Monte Cook back at wizards

Looks like Wizards has rehired Monte Cook. I think this is a great idea: Monte is a thoughtful game developer, who obviously has respect for the good ideas of past editions, and it'll do Wizards good to have him in R&D. That is, if he is in R&D? It's possible that I misread it and he's just...

Illustrated OD&D Wandering Monster tables poster

My fault. I only printed up a handful of these posters, figuring I'd print more at the local kinko's; but I spent so much time at the Gygax Memorial booth that I never found time! I'm planning to donate 50 or so of these posters as rewards for an upcoming kickstarter for Dave Arneson Game Day...

Happy Birthday: World's Hardest Gary Gygax Quiz

In honor of Gary Gygax's birthday, here's a Gary Gygax trivia quiz so hard that James Mal only got 90%. Can you do better?

GenCon 2011? What do you think?

I'll be there this year, and I'll blog stuff on blogofholding.com and possibly crosspost here.

character sheet on a business card

I made a 4e character sheet that's about as small as it can be, and maybe a little smaller. You can carry a stack of pregen level-1 characters in your wallet so that you're always ready in case a game breaks out. Note: You MIGHT want to take a short name like "Gus". Here's the front: You can...

    Rope tied to an arrow

YES! This is a classic D&D question. In real life, this would absolutely not work. In D&D, I'd say, yeah, go for it. And if the PCs put boxing gloves on the end of their arrows, they can use them to knock out enemies as well. Anything The Green Arrow can do is OK for D&D.

picture of every creature in the MM1, where they live, and their level

For your convenience: Monster Manual 3 on a business card, which updates the monster math. Just throw that MM1 right in the garbage! ;) The yellow and purple are just to distinguish the crammed-together level bands from each other.

picture of every creature in the MM1, where they live, and their level

I went through the Monster Manual 1 and crammed a picture of every monster into one illustration. Full-size version at blogofholding.com It could theoretically be used to create on-the-fly encounters (cross-index the character level with the area type) although, truth be told, it might not...

    Vampire in play

A player just played a vampire in my group. It actually worked pretty well. He didn't tell the other characters he was a vampire, even going to the point of obfuscating his class to the other players: "What class are you playing?" "Um, I'm basically a rogue." When people asked why he was...

a hand-drawn city map you're free to use

I drew a city map for my weekend D&D game. If it's of any use, please take it. There's a bigger version at blog of holding, along with a PDF version. Feel free to use, edit, spindle or mutilate.

    Mazes and Monsters retro clone

Monsters & Mazes is a pretty good name. Now I can say that the name was suggested on consultation with a lawyer. Or, more precisely, A GUY WHO CLAIMED TO BE A LAWYER ON THE INTERNET! which is good enough for IP law, I think. ("Your Honor, he's a Blindheim, Level 18!")

    Mazes and Monsters retro clone

Progress on the PDF is going well! I'm hoping to have it done in less than a month. It's surprisingly difficult to put together even a joke RPG. I'd like to end up with an actually playable ruleset. The average RPG has a LOT of rules, and, surprisingly, a few minor details were left out of the...

Heroes of the Fallen Lands analysis

At blogofholding we're reading Heroes of the Fallen Lands cover to cover and posting extensively. We'll be adding posts for the next couple of days. One of the things I noticed so far is that the Thief is almost totally a Single Ability Dependent class. There are no class features that rely on...

    Race First!

Actually, Heroes of the Forgotten Lands is, I think, the first D&D book, I think, where you choose class first. The race chapter came first in 1e, 2e, 3e, and 4e PHB, right? The fact is, though, that no one did it that way. Consciously choosing race first, as the OP suggest, is actually a...

Human Heroic Effort versus Elven Accuracy

Let's throw the Deva ability into the mix. The Human +4 is strictly better than the Deva +1d6, right? (Although there may be cases where you KNOW you need a +5 or a +6 to hit, they may be rare.)
