Finding Traps Stinks - Or Am I Doing It Wrong?

I totally agree. Passive checks like Stealth are good because an active (rolled) number is compared against a passive (static) number. Finding traps, though, is a comparison of one static number against another. Ridiculous: not a lot of variability there. It's as if combat were a static attack...

    dissecting the Red Box

If by chance your Starter Set thirst is not yet quenched, at blogofholding I'm liveblogging as I go through my copy of the Essentials Red Box. So far I've written about a dozen posts from the Player's Book. All my Red Box posts can be found here, and I'll be adding another post about every...

    Encounters- Essentials Only, Moving Forward...

I agree with Imaro. It sounds like their current plan is that each season will combine a) Essentials (their "evergreen books") and b) whatever book they are currently showcasing (for instance, their Shadow sourcebook in a few months). This is also consistent with their statements that, going...

    D&D in Target?!?!

This is a good point. There is a huge teen market for fantasy literature. D&D should be courting this market. If that means copying Scholastic printing conventions, sobeit.

Essentials: Magic Item Rarity Explained, it's actually good!

Agreed. I think we can assume that Staff of Ruin will NOT be a Common item, despite the fact that it it adds static damage. It has a property. I'd bet that most Common weapons, implements, armors, and neck slot items have no properties.

Essentials: Magic Item Rarity Explained, it's actually good!

You know, it totally makes sense to limit PCs to buying/crafting Common items. Common items (+1 Magic Swords, etc) are not rewards; they're basically game-mandated. Let's take a 16th-level party. Their +3 weapons, armor and amulets are necessities. But all their other magic item abilities are...

Essentials: Magic Item Rarity Explained, it's actually good!

magic item rarity article The article on item rarity is up. This is actually one of the Essentials changes I'm most looking forward to. Common items are the boring stat-boosting items like +2 swords. They're the ones that characters can make and buy. This is a huge fix: I'm sick of giving out...

New "Red Box" Starter Set hands-on preview

Nice character sheet. The fact that there are only 12 lines for "powers and feats" tell us that it is for the starter sheet only.

How Essentials and beyond is a ...zucchini...

I guess I don't understand why you are intentionally spelling it wrong like 1000 times, even though the correct spelling has been pointed out to you by multiple people. Can you explain the wordplay? I am not very smart. Talk to me as if I am a child.

    Essentials Only Campaigns

I don't who could object to an Essentials-only game, or any anything-only game, for that matter. A limited palette is a chance to play with restricted options, which avoids sprawl, analysis paralysis, and the same boring, optimal choices you made for your last character. Limits are good...

    Fighter Slayer preview

Ha ha. Seen that way, maybe it is pretty boss. The FIRST time you see it. Around Kobold Slayer #3, I will get the same sort of fatigue I get when I see yet another ultra-rare angel-on-earth deva wizard. But actually, since kobolds are small, they may not be the most optimal slayers anyway, and...

Gen Con: Slavicsek says core books will continue to be published, other tidbits

Added some minor less-newsy stuff that we remembered from the seminar, including less races than 3e, minis releases are continuing but being spaced out more, etc. http://blogofholding.com/?p=803

    Fighter Slayer preview

Ugh, I hadn't thought of that. That does feel a little broken. My sugar high just became a sugar crash. Now you can just dump STR, right? You can be a Single Attribute Dependency DEX build. The best Slayer fighter is a kobold (+2 DEX, +2 CON) who can shift 2 every turn so they can stay in...
