First Edition Feel: Why Is This a Good Thing?

It's true. I think, though, that we've reached a point in gaming culture where "1st Edition" is a catch all term for all D&D before 2nd Edition AD&D. I don't think most people know the difference between the various early versions.

    D&D 5E [D&D 5e] Planescape - In Through the Out Door

I hope I'm not misunderstanding and that you mean for Eurid to be present as well. Let me know and I'll remove this post if necessary. Eurid kicks away the reaching tendrils of a small ooze puddle, reacting hungrily to the clumps of wet ash he's wiping from a copper urn to flick into the slime...

First Edition Feel: Why Is This a Good Thing?

I'll agree that I don't think it's been achieved. I was speaking only of the motivation in attempting it. I like AD&D, so I play AD&D. I'm not particularly interested in emulating it. Early editions of D&D suggest a player/dm ratio of up to 50:1. I believe the pioneers intended that a campaign...

First Edition Feel: Why Is This a Good Thing?

I think "First Edition Feel" differs from merely "First Edition" specifically in that it avoids a lot of your complaints. That is to say that if someone is playing a game that "feels" like first edition, they are de facto also specifically not playing first edition. Presumably because they like...

D&D 5E [D&D 5e] Planescape- In Through the Out Door (Full)

Unsung - As resident outer planes and undeath expert, I figure Eurid should have the answers (or maybe just be aware of a few competing theories) to a couple questions. I'll be speaking from a by-the-book understanding of 2E AD&D Planescape, so of course don't feel like I'm trying to pressure...

I suck at DMing. Can anyone help?

Here you'll find a book that I haven't read, but which comes highly recommended by others and is from an RPG creator whom I think is hugely talented: http://www.sjgames.com/robinslaws/ As for personal advice, I suggest you hatch an evil plan and have your villain go about completing his plan...

D&D 5E [D&D 5e] Planescape- In Through the Out Door (Full)

Background for Eurid Turnstone: Stephon Turnstone of Shadowdale, a paladin of Helm, first stumbled his way into the Cage nearly forty years ago. With no immediate route back, he fell in with the Harmonium and eventually came to consider Sigil his home. The faction was good to him, and soon he...

D&D 5E [D&D 5e] Planescape- In Through the Out Door (Full)

I'm going through some personal stuff that's kind of sapping my energy, but I'm still excited about this game and hope nobody takes my being a slowpoke about my background as evidence to the contrary. And for the record, I have run The Eternal Boundary and part of Harbinger House--just in case...

If you want to make Sigil come alive at your table, I can't recommend "Uncaged: Faces of Sigil" strongly enough. It's an incredible game aid. I'm also a big fan of the Troy Denning novel, "Pages of Pain."

Apologies for the length. I haven't really played with the forum much, so don't know how to do the hidden text thing. I'm also pretty new to 5E, so let me know if I missed anything. I'll be making a separate post shortly with background and flavor stuff. Eurid Turnstone; Paladin of Kelemvor...

Just about to type up my character sheet. Sorry about the delay. Unsung, have you considered setting up a wiki? I use Obsidian Portal and can't recommend it highly enough.

Sorry about the slow response. I had a friend in from out of town and his flight was canceled while he was here and blah blah blah. I've been keeping up, though. I'm torn on race. I think I may go tiefling, yes. I hope to post a character sheet tomorrow for you to have a look at. 3rd level...

D&D 5E Where does the punitive approach to pc death come from?

I doubt it would work well (or, at least, as well) in editions after AD&D 2E, but prior to that the expectation built into the game was of a sort of "living" campaign, with many players in separate and alternating combinations, with multiple characters, beneath one or a small cabal of dungeon...

Cool. I mentioned Shemeska as a sort of "might need to split town fast" button. However, I can see how a street tout's expertise might be of limited use during an extended planar romp. I'll go with the dusty paladin. Eurid Turnstone, Paladin of Kelemvor and Factotum of the Dustmen.

I'm feeling pretty sold on Thom, provided you didn't want the tout our primes hire to be an NPC. He can owe some favors back at the Gatehouse, and between Kylie and Shemeska he's probably got enough bosses to kick him through whatever portals you need him to hop into.

Honest Thom would love nothing more than to take the lost modron under his wing and teach it the modronly arts of carrying Honest Thom's satchel, threatening Honest Thom's enemies, and protecting Honest Thom's honest behind. It's literally the absolute least he could do.

    Schrodinger's HP and Combat

Hit Points are a currency with which you pay the reaper to avoid killing blows. At the end of a fight you are bruised, nicked, scraped, sweating, exhausted, and half-dead... but nobody caught you in the stomach with an axe. Nobody beaned your head with an arrow or flayed your skin with a spell...
