XP house rules for StalkingBlue and others

Ah I see now. That makes a lot of sense. :D Encouraging players to state story goals in character is a very cool idea I think. I also like the (small) XP bonus - I'll definitely consider using something like it if I set down clearer rules on XP awards. Currently the only way players in...

    Sun God...with a twist. Ideas?

Hm, in RL Sun Gods have nothing in common with Pelor if you look at hot, arid countries - desert people are likely to envision Hell as a hot, glaring desert and see the sun as a terrible, hostile force. (Similar to traditional cold-country beliefs, which picture Hell as being a hell of ice...

XP house rules for StalkingBlue and others

Cool stuff rl ! Thanks for posting this. I especially like the story milestones and the fact that you give your players input on what they should be. I've been awarding mission achievement XP on no clear basis, been playing it by ear. I haven't decided whether I want to lay down clearer...

    Midnight with different rules?

Cool thank you! Looks very interesting. I'll check the rules out in detail later and post any comments on your thread in House Rules. How're your Midnight plans going? :)

How many Players in your game?

I currently play in one RP-focussed game where I'm one of two players, and until recently played in another, combat-heavy game with up to seven players (seven when everyone turned up, a rare thing). The group I DM Midnight for currently has four. I'm happy with that for my game - it's about...

Veils and Crossings (was: Shadow over Felthera) - StalkingBlue's Midnight game

When Lt Ara Than got back to A'Hamra after her second foray to the white ruins at the borders of Erethor, she found a letter stuffed underneath the door to her quarters. The letter is addressed to her in her mother's flowing script. It has a second letter enfolded inside it. "Dearest...

Veils and Crossings (was: Shadow over Felthera) - StalkingBlue's Midnight game

[Pallas's account, by Pallas's player: ] “This is how you shall know him: 'He partakes of the bread and mould of dawn. His head is in the clouds but his ankles chained to straw. He will address the one of you who is not present. His are the robes of snow, and the lost wolf.'” So we went...

Help me convince my players that the Cleric is cool

I was going to say, why convince players to change their preferences only because you'd like to see a class played that you love? Of course ... ... this is sublime. Brilliant understanding of how players' minds work. :uhoh: :)

How many levels in your dungeon?

    Thanks anyway! :)

How many levels in your dungeon?

How cool is this? You wouldn't have a link to more info handy, by any chance? Or a book you can recommend? :)

if you were suddenly pulled into the FR...

I'd hire a Gather Information or Knowledge (religion) expert (actually preferably someone who combined both), and have them find out which diety the bets are on - in terms of bringing about world destruction. Then I'd go back that deity up. :p I wouldn't rule out making minor sacrifices...

Veils and Crossings (was: Shadow over Felthera) - StalkingBlue's Midnight game

Keeping fingers crossed here that you find other people interested in a MN game, Brother S - we're finding Midnight an incredibly inspiring setting. If no one's willing to DM it for you, you could always recruit a couple of players and take the tiller ... a small group is prob even best for...

    What are you?

Oh man. We're just too alike. That's almost literally what I was going to post. :) In a world where one could be only either DM or player, I'd choose to be a DM. Although I know I'd burn out and get cranky and dissatisfied, as I have in the past when not getting a chance to play...

Veils and Crossings (was: Shadow over Felthera) - StalkingBlue's Midnight game

Just to state it clearly: I do appreciate feedback. I'll also be happy to answer any questions. :)

Veils and Crossings (was: Shadow over Felthera) - StalkingBlue's Midnight game

Wow! Thank you guys. I'm floored. :D So will be my players I'm sure - it's them who write most of these Story Hour posts after all. (Not to mention that without some fantastic players, I couldn't be running this game.)

Veils and Crossings (was: Shadow over Felthera) - StalkingBlue's Midnight game

As Apari and Pallas cross the Threshold, each PC has the briefest flash of a strange experience: Apari Ghostwalker notices an impossibly stocky little man jogging beside his horse, whirling a slim black chain. He recognises the chain that wrapped itself around his forearm a while ago and...

Dealing with equipment dependency in D&D

IME CR is a dangerous thing to go by in designing a challenge. What I find is you have to look at is the weak spots in a particular party's / PC's defenses and see whether the particular strength of the foe makes it likely that a PC will be killed in one round (or worse, one hit). That is true...

Dealing with equipment dependency in D&D

How do you balance non-spellcasting PCs against spellcasting PCs? My feeling is that spellcasters dominate the game at higher levels even at standard wealth and item levels. If you deny the PCs magic items, doesn't that create an imbalance between nonspellcasters and spellcasters?

Dealing with equipment dependency in D&D

Hm, so once you settle on a certain ability for a certain location you could never change after that? That would be a serious drawback. For example the Witch I played until recently in a high-level game that was half highly challenging and potentially deadly fights, half power-politics carried...

Dealing with equipment dependency in D&D

Good points - the fact that abilities don't take 'spaces' the way items do might affect balance though, assuming the PCs are wealthy enough to afford lots of abilities. Doubling DMG prices, as suggested above, might work. Flexibility vs pre-written: this is a matter of campaign style and...
